What to do when the smog pump...

Bad smog pump requires tough choices in California. You either replace the pump or replace the car. The CARB doesn't care.

300TD vacuum pump noise
Published (2009-11-06 14:51:00)
I've searched the EPC every-which way and cannot find a vacuum pump diagram of any kind, which I had hoped would confirm which type of gasket is supposed to be used with your pump. If you can get an MB part number, that would be useful as well

could you do it, sure, but is it really worth it , probably not. I replaced the tranny in my 66 230 sl when the motor was out, very easy. not sure if I would do the same with the motor inplace.

What to do when the smog pump...
Published (2009-11-08 02:07:00)
OK, I went to the junk yard early yesterday (Saturday). There was only one Mercedes with a M103 engine that happened to be intact. I had to remove a lot of stuff before being able to access the smog pump. Its all good since this is a hobby and practice makes perfect. I did not ruin anything on the car as I want others to take what they need (I see a lot of abuse at the pick and pull places and it is disheartening and a waste). I also took the...

Mercedes Benz and Formula One

It's understandable since, like what the rest of the world calls "football" . . . if there isn't an American in the chase, it gets virtually no coverage in the US. Lewis Hamilton and Jim Button would never get a TV commercial here . . . heck, even Schumi was pretty much unknown as a character in Pixar's "Cars."

Hi, I jacked the front up to see why it may be going crooked and the bush at the top arm on the RHS looked not quite right, when the car was jacked up. I would appreciate if someone can comment on if this looks normal ?

Bill,
Welcome! I don't know the answers to your questions, I don't use anything other than pump fuel, but be patient because there are some knowledgable folks here (Dropnosky is one) who can probably help you out.
If you have other questions not related to the fuel you are using, the Marshall Booth Diesel area and the W123 area get lots of traffic and your questions will get faster ...

Well, they are both M110 engines, so they are essentially the same engine.
The devil may be in the details - some stuff might not line up perfectly here and there, different brackets or something like that, but if you have both engines available to you, you can trade out off the old engine what you need onto the new engine and make it work.
I have never even seen an M110 engine though, ...

It it were me, I'd be haunting the junkyards before either of the other options.

The screens you are talking about are likely the ones in the valve body. If you don't mind lying on your back to drop the pan and the valve body without losing any of the checkballs, that will be a start. From there, you can clean the valve body with a couple cans of parts cleaner. If it works, you got away cheap. If it doesn't, you still got away cheap.................................unless you ...

Travis,
Sounds to me like you have an air leak into the fuel system. There are a bunch of o-rings in the fuel line connections, and such a leak could cause much of the problems you describe.
I'd recommend you find a new mechanic, as the idle speed should never be adjusted at any linkage.

Ben, the repair manual is saying the bolts are 1 1/2" long. Use the lower torque value if the outside diameter of the bolts is 12mm, and the higher torque value if it is 14mm.

This year I enjoyed MotoGP more then F1.
F1 had a crazy year; cheating, KERS, Max Mosely, Bernie Ecclestone- and I understood what he was trying to express and took no offense to any of his comments. Just that everything taken as a whole made for a weird season.
What is the story with Kimi Raikkonen? did you see the youtube video where he was drunk on his boat and falling on his head?

I think I would park the car till I got the rebuilt unit in. Not a chance you should take if it is indeed coming from the vac pump. I am not familiar with your rebuilt unit but if you have confidence in your rebuild...Go for it. I have a Pierburg unit on my 87 which supposedly will not do damage if it goes south...or should that be go north?

Most mechanic supply houses offer a "parts cleaner". It is an electric pump driven sort of sink that recirculates a cleaning fluid, usually kerosine. They are fairly inexpensive and in wide use in most garages.
See your NAPA or similar supplier.

Ben,
so here is what I have learned
1. For many jobs the old beam and pointer T wrench work just fine and are very reasonably priced
2. If you go with a "click" type wrench you should not exceed half the torque ...
