As other people have said, the amount of grappling that TJF does varies massively from instructor to instructor. Having said that I've yet to hear about them training skills that are fundamental to grappling, such as shooting and sprawling. IMHO the grappling skills of the students at my local BJJ club are in a much higher league than the grappling skills of my local TJF instructors. If you want...

Hey guys. Class ended today (hot as hell at the school today) and as we all lined up at the end of class Coach said he was going to take care of a few promotions. He handed out some stripes and then pulled a blue belt and called my name. I was completely surprised. I won't bore you by describing in detail my innermost feelings. Suffice to say that when I heard my name, the first thing ...

Alright, I know we're technically not supposed to compete in tournaments, but I go to the US Open here in Orlando every year now. I've competed and taken home trophies in the last two years. This year, I placed in the Advanced Self Defense and Advanced Traditional Weapons, and missed my Traditional Forms event. I suppose I do it to prove an example. We don't train in the rigid way, like Karate...

Ryu Te (Oyata sensei's art) Is basically a comprehensive study of kata, and our bunkai is broken down to the point where basically every inch of the kata contains 10 techniques. We don't do bunkai in the order of the kata, but rather each technique is explored in different situations, different angles, etc.

Hi, I'm looking for some street effective jitsu in Sydney. Is there any? I'm not interested in fighting in a ring. I don't want to be standing in a class, punching and kicking in a line and yelling at the same time. I want someone to attack me so I can defend and maime (if required) that's it, simple. I've been a couple places and have also tried Judo, but classes are big, some ...

I'm taking a class 3X a week. The instructor, teaches Muay Thai, JKD, and screama. I also take kick boxing, and jiu jitsu at another gym(trying to get a well-rounded style), and I wrestled for 3 years. My question is, what place does Jeet Kune Do have in MMA? I realize it is not the most emphasized art, but having just started the class I know I don't know the art well, but many of the parrys ...

In the past, I've had a prejudice against modern Wushu. I used to believe that it was a degeneration and corruption of "traditional" and "genuine" kung fu. But now I am not so sure anymore. I have just read Meir Shahar's new book and it's made me do a lot of re-thinking. Is there REALLY such a big distinction? Or is it just a matter of dates? Both modern wushu and traditional ...
