galens, how old are you? I get the impression you're not much older than this kid. It's impossible to know for sure, but is it possible that you're taking things too seriously? If he's acting as expected in class, who are you to tell him what to do or how to train on his own time? Should he change the way he enjoys himself on his own time? Should he do so because you think he'd be a good training partner for you? I...

Within the Bujinkan there has long been the debate as to how much "rules" and "standards" should be enforced by the Hombu and Hatsumi Sensei along with the Shihan. I use quotation marks as most people have different ideas on what those rules and standards should be. But the general state of being is that at the level of Shidoshi (Godan or higher) a practitioner can start their own dojo, and in a ...

Good heads-up, Bob.
I adhere strictly to the line that I-don't-do-business-over-the phone; that saves a lot of hassle.

I'd strongly recommend against it. You're talking about altering your hands, permanently. Let's just say the first two knuckles on both hands, aren't unaffected.
If you have done the research and seriously want to do this, research makiwara as well as the old sand/gravel/rocks in a bowl methods.
Seriously, research it beyond what seems 'ok' before you make your final decision.

Not every sport TKD-er ignores the art. it IS possible to do both.
It is a poor assumption on those who stereotype sport TKD-ers to think that all they do is sport and dont practice the art. it is possible to do both.

Well I am in the court that you can do both and be good at both. I think that each enhance one another.
The sport that you are doing is based in the art so you need the art to that aspect. But if only doing the sport and you become good at it then you should have no issue transitioning into the art. You will already be conditioned and would not have to worry about that aspect of the art....
