Need a program that I can...

You need to turn off auto-fill with rests in the options of either Simple or Speedy Entry, whichever you use. The options are in the Simple or Speedy menu that appears when the tool is selected. Bear in mind that for most usages, auto-fill is a boon, not a hindrance. If you really want a program that puts the symbols you want where you want them, then perhaps a vector graphics editor might be more suitable. Inkscape is a free package....

Forum Admin said... All, I’ve changed the title of this thread to more accurately represent the current topics being discussed.   I thought a more accurate title would be helpful in directing others that were interested in this conversation to this thread.        I am checking with our engineers on the availability of the current PDK, and there will be an official statement made soon.  ...

Tutorial for Accents
Published (2009-11-25 19:44:00)
I have put together a tutorial on adding accented characters to Finale. If any of you have the time to look it over, I'd appreciate it if you tell me of any glaring mistakes! Also, if any Mac users would like to put together a document covering the same issues on a Mac, I'll be happy to post it.

Dear Mrs Scott, I can feel your frustration but please let me assure you there is no program more configurable to your needs than Finale. You can do most of what you want with Finale, usually in more than one way in fact - it's just that you need to know your way around a little better. Also, some of the advice you've been given isn't exactly what you needed. To turn off the time signature, use the Staff Tool and double click...

John, Good catch. I'm surprised this hasn't come up before. I tried various ways of deleting the measure, but what you describe is 100% reproducible. The chords in the next measure always disappear. Bill

Removal of rest automatically...

Stefan Nowak said... Still, my initial question has not been answered..... Logic has a very smart way of entering and editing and I thought that Finale might be similar being dedicated scoring software, If I delete a rest in Logic it will change the duration of the note previous to the rest automatically, very handy. Stef That's not intuitive at all... if Finale did that, I'd blow a gasket!

highlighting measures in scores...
Published (2009-11-24 15:29:00)
I think it would be a great idea to have a "Highlight Tool" in Finale. The highlighted area could be printing or non-printing, as the user chooses. Engravers could use the tool to mark areas that need touching up at a later stage, for instance, accidentals that appear in the score but not in a certain part. Educators and other folk could use it to mark a passage to reinforce a particular approach or performance practice....

Several pieces on one page
Published (2009-11-24 23:23:00)
I would quibble with this bit of advice in the Finale article: >Arrange the Measure Layout with the Selection Tool (or Mass Edit) - Lock Layout so measures don’t reflow. It's better to set the measure attribute for the first measure of each new piece to "begin a new staff system." No need to lock anything; you'll likely still want other measures to reflow.

transfering finale to new computer?

Go ahead and buy Finale now. You can install it on up to two computers but you can also deauthorize it from a computer before installing on another one.

"Mr S" might have more credibility if he wasn't hiding behind anonymity. Most folks here are not ashamed to identify themselves and provide links to their music. Maybe "Mr S" stands for "Mr Sibelius?" In any case, I am not interested in the opinions of anonymous writers, mainly because I have no way of establishing their expertise on the subject at hand.

better sounding samples than GPO? have you compared the PRICE between this product and GPO? I found East West's Complete Composer "on sale" for $1500. Add to that, I believe you need to be using Native Instruments' Kontakt sampler (another $400 or so) to even consider using it in Finale. GPO4 sells for $150 for the "download version" (the upgrade from the Kontakt Player version is only $50).

Yet again, despite believing I had the problem cracked, my perennial nightmare with GPO strings refusing to play anything resembling a smooth legato has resurfaced. It's not subtle either. I'm talking about phrases being completely chopped up. I'm using smartshape slurs, and there are no inappropriate expressions or articulations interfering with things. I'm on Finale 2009c and have had this ...

You can do any of the following: Specify a new default document, in Program Options > New. The file must be in Finale's Component Files folder. Create a template file and place it in the Document Styles folder. It will then be available in the Setup Wizard. Make sure your new documents have JazzText specified as the font in Document Options.

Programming a themed concert...? Thomas Weelkes set to work on one of his lay clerks with a candlestick, but didn't finish the job. "Leave it, Tom: he's had enough!" Puccini was a keen murderer of birds, of course. There was a BBC Radio 3 programme a while ago that linked musicians who had been imprisoned. But not all of them were sent down deservedly. I'd be surprised if there weren't ...

In Finale 2003, it is not quite as simple as copy/paste, but it's not bad. You need to have the graphics functions, which are available in full Finale, but may well be available in less expensive versions too. Check the function comparison chart on the website. With the graphics function, you click and drag to select the area you want. From there you can export the selection to a file. Then you...

Hi: I teach Finale to composition students at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford. I use 2009 on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro with generally good results. Most of my students use Finale 2009 on their own MacBooks, and one student uses 2010. Yesterday, we were working on an exercise with multiple measure number regions, and most of the students, including the one using 2010, ...
