Colorchecker Passport review

QUOTE (ErikKaffehr @ Nov 9 2009, 03:13 AM) Hi Eric, I guess it's more 2) than 1). The profile cannot now about the spectrum of light. I assume that profiles are built about continous illuminants. I presume that the color checker colors are choosen so they minimize metameric effects? In general I suppose that we probably should used the Adobe Standard renditions and tweak colors, because they are probably better made than...

Canon 50 1.4 vs. 85 1.8
Published (2009-11-08 17:28:00)
QUOTE (brivard @ Nov 8 2009, 05:22 PM) I recently purchased a used Canon 5D and a 17-40 f/4L, but the 17-40 is now my only lens. I need something with a little more reach than 40 mm for certain landscapes, and something much faster for indoor shooting. I want to know which of the two Canon primes are a better choice. I know 85 would give me the extra reach I want, but I feel the 50 is a more usable lens. Or would it be better...

QUOTE (teddillard @ Nov 7 2009, 07:17 PM) Sorry, where do you get that? I may be completely off-base here, but the CMOS just gives you a readout of each pixel, not A/D at the pixel... in any case, the processing is the real "secret sauce" here. As I mentioned, one sensor design had noise filtering and some limited color processing before the A/D conversion- working the analog data. There was a great deal of...

Here in the EU we start phasing out incandescent lamps, replacing them with energy saving flourescent bulbs. So viewing conditions get worse. Best regards Erik It is a similar situation in the USA. QUOTE (teddillard @ Nov 7 2009, 08:17 PM) And DarkPenguin, the firmware is what is in the processor- what you're calling the chip. Upgrade the firmware, upgrade the processor... so you could keep the same processor and change the processing by reprogramming the "chip". You could if that's how they designed it. I would be stunned if it was doing any significant image processing in firmware.

Bill, you use a filter on this? I know it's digital, but there's a lot of magenta and it reminds me of a filter that was popular in the early 2000's called an enhancing filter which was touted as enhancing the reds and oranges in fall colors but all it really did was add a magenta cast to everything. Anyway, I'm assuming you really want honest comments and not just compliments, so that's it--a little heavy on the...

QUOTE (kuau @ Nov 5 2009, 11:43 PM) Running LR 2.5 and shooting with a D700 NEFS. Shooting primarily landscapes. I am confused on which profile to choose in LR Development Module. I realize it's all personal preference yet if im looking for the most faithful reproduction of the scene without having to create a custom profile for every shooting condition what would be a good starting point? Adobe Standard, ACR 4.6 then...

QUOTE (titusbear @ Nov 9 2009, 02:43 PM) 11/09/2009 AM hello: after looking at several works by artists like Sigmar Polke ("Lens Paintings") et.al. - I'm interested in the concept of 'over-painting' = or in my case 'over-printing'. I have an Epson 4880 - exclusively matte black. I'd like to try and 'overprint' by running an already printed image through the printer again to ...

First it's flare - it may come from an area brightly lit by the sun just over the top of the frame? It can be decently cured by LR by desaturating and replacing with an appropriate color with the adjustment brush, if the original area doesn't contain important detail (maybe not so easy here). About noise and sharpening tools in LR, this post about ACR is fully relevant, but what to aim ...

Despite the heavy 2.0/1.8 versions there is nothing better. I had one in the past, it is very sharp wide open. Vignetting is present but can easily be corrected. You are able to use a tripod collar ring with this lens, it is not required but makes the handling easier. Currently I use a 2.0/135 plus TK 1.4. This combo is pretty light. I do not miss anything in between 135 and 190 mm, and I ...

Hi Jonathan, The best place to start in terms of the code would be dng_validate.cpp. The dng_validate () routine in there will read in a negative, parse through it, and build the various image stages. This includes decompressing the raw image data, linearizing it if necessary, and render to a TIFF file if you want. From a developer's perspective, I'd suggest putting a breakpoint somewhere ...

An interesting question, because I recently sold off the last of my film cameras after going through much the same quandary every few months for several years. What it comes down to in the end, I believe, is whether one is interested in the process or the results. If one is enamoured of the process, then go for it. But, do the whole thing, from shooting to processing to printing in the ...

QUOTE (Sheldon N @ Nov 4 2009, 12:12 AM) You don't mention Mac or PC? In PC land, I'd recommend an OC'd i7 CPU (shoot for 4Ghz), SSD (or pair of RAID 0 SSD's) for the OS, 2-4 7200RPM HD's in RAID 0 for scratch, plus several big TB HD's for storage. 24gb of RAM is overkill on a 64bit OS, since it's all directly accessible. 12-16GB should be fine. The storage hard drives don't need ...

We use a 1ds Mk3 which is essentially noiseless at iso1600, and very good at iso3200. By noiseless I mean at normal print sizes for people photography. The 5d we have is also very good at 1600, and I am sure the Mk2 is going to be at least as good as the 1ds. Why wait? There will always be something better around the corner. Probably a second-hand 5D would be great for you now, then ...

Hi, I'd suggest that it is useful for: 1) Calibrating the DSLR/MFDB for a certain set of light conditions 2) Calibrating the DSLR/MFDB for individual variations The software can be downloaded for free and I see no reason it would not work with any recent Color Checker (I tried and it works). The Passport itself solves the problem of handling the Color Checker which is quite fragile. I ...
