Twisted-Stitch Knitting
Published (2009-11-13 23:41:00)
> Is anyone familiar with Maria Erlbacher's Twisted-Stitch Knitting ? I've been interested in Bavarian and Austrian twisted-stitch designs from the small section in Knitting in the Old Way , but I'm not aware of any other books that cover this school of knitting in more depth. I'd love to get other knitters' opinions of this book before buying. Thanks! Suzanne Flickr pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2totangle/...

A Swift for free!
Published (2009-11-13 18:11:00)
> Hi, It is Swift Week on KR, and I have a beautiful, large, Swedish wooden swift to give away to a good home!! I bought it probably 20 years ago from Woodland Woolworks, and used it fairly lightly. It has been carefully kept safe, but is very lonely. As I grew older, my arthritis and arm injuries became such that it was just too big and heavy for me to handle, so I bought the little metal/plastic Japanese swift. I would love to send the...

> I did find some child-sized sea bands (but children come in so many sizes) on Amazon, but I can't believe the shipping time on them. Right now, as a design, I'm thinking of combining double-knit & short-row techniques, maybe with illusion on the other side, to make an internal pocket for a bead. I used to make hair bands all the time -- this shouldn't take longer. And it can be as fancy as my design capability. You do...

Self-striping yarn: cast on
Published (2009-11-13 12:49:00)
> Even if there is a "magic number" with Lorna's Laces it will not be consistent though the skein. 30" in short, but not as short as some of the striping I've experienced with that brand. To get thick stripes you need at least 5 feet of colour before it changes. At 30" per colour the only way to get more than a row would be to use 2 strands at a time, knit around with one strand then switch to the other. You...

hi, I have the 3 original books in German; if I didn't, I'd definitely buy the new version. Dee, I'm not sure if I have a clear picture of your corded effect, but you might try one of the sewn bind-offs, like Elizabeth Zimmermann's or the outline stitch bind-off . You could use one strand of each color. Suzanne Flickr pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2totangle/ Ravelry project page: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/2totangle

I vote for the 2 circulars. When I went back to knitting after many years, I decided to make small things, socks, mittens etc. I do have and have used DP's and do not particularly like them. I read Cat Bordhi's book and liked the idea of 2 circulars. As all my old needles and my mother's were stashed in one drawer, I decided I needed new ones. I bought some ...

Try using cable cast-on and see if you get better results. By using cable cast on you won't be mixing 2 strands of yarn so should be able to get the edge done in one color. Be sure to start the cast on at the very beginning of the color that you want on the edge. GFTC of NYC my knitting photos on Flickr or Ravelry

LOL I consistently make simple stockinette hats that are way too big. Hats are the only projects I do this on and it doesn't matter what size hat I am making. I never use a pattern - I just find out what my gauge is for the yarn, do the math, cast on, and make a hat that isn't even close to the size needed. It takes me 3 inches of knitting before I figure out the ...

Cables - I can never tell what I'm doing w/lace - it needs to be blocked
to see anything. Cables always amaze me. Every time I do one, I say, "How
did I do that?" They are so much easier than they look.

IMHO if you don't own a yarn shop, you don't need it. Just how much yarn do you wind in this day and age where so much comes on prewound skeins? I enjoy the feel of winding a center feed ball of yarn in my hands. fran http://martianmischief.blogspot.com/
