How do you protect against fraud?
Published (2009-01-07 02:52:00)
Shopping and banking safely online: Before you buy Before you buy anything online make a note of the address of the company that you are buying from. This should include details of the telephone and/or fax - never rely on just an email address. Always use secure sites These sites have 'https' in front of the web address which indicates that the company has been independently checked to make sure they are who they say they are. A...

Annuity Mix-Up
Published (2009-01-03 22:18:00)
The grandfather is the "OWNER" of the accounts, but the children are the annuitants and MOST likely, the BENEFICIARIES of the annuities. When Grandpa passes, they will inherit the funds inside and they can take them out without penalty, but will owe income tax on the growth. Of course, they are young children and the will be taxed at THEIR income bracket (which may be 0) for the GROWTH only. Non-qualified simply means that...

Credit Card account suspended

Discover has every right to deny reinstatement, but I am surprised they did not disclose the reasons for not reinstating. I believe that is required. Discover expects good to excellent credit. Find a card issuer that will accept average credit and you will have a chance to build up your credit history.

Annuity Mix-Up
Published (2009-01-03 12:42:00)
I need some help understanding some annuities that I believe were setup in error. My wife's grandmother (kids great-grandmother - GG) initially set up the annuities for the benefit of my kids (K). They were setup in 1992 and 1994. GG passed away in 1996. The K grandfather (wife's father - G) took over as the responsible party on the account. G had a stroke several years back, and now cannot help in terms of remembering the details...

Published (2009-01-03 17:05:00)
I am semi-retired but have about $10,000 computer consulting self-employment income (no employees). I have an existing Roth IRA. 1. Can I contribute the $6,000 (for age 50+) self-employment income for 2008 to this existing Roth IRA? (or do Roth IRA contributions have to be made ONLY by people that work for someone else?) 2. Can my non-working spouse do the same to his as the spousal IRA?

I am looking into getting a home equity line or loan, for home improvements. I cannot decide which is better-- the equity line, or the loan? The equity line rates are lower (4% at my CU, adjusted monthly based on the Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal, min=4%, Max=18%). The variable rate makes me nervous--My problem is, with the economy the way it is, I don't know how long such low ...

Mebjr, As long as you hold the stock you do not have a loss. Contact your broker and tell him/her you want to sell your 605 shares of WM. This may cost you a few dollars but that will add to your basis in the stock increasing your loss. Selling your stock today would be a 2009 loss, not 2008. Without selling, you do need some documentation that says the stock is worthless, ...

Unfortunately, the reality of the internet is; there is always a chance for fraud. I have been caught off guard before, around 2 years ago I lost $100 or so. I'm pretty lucky that I didn't lose more than I did. I usually have the buyer pay through paypal simply because it's the most convenient. To be honest though, I hate paypal. There policies are ridiculous and their resolution ...
