The true cost of Smoking
Published (2009-11-24 06:13:00)
Smoking away 20 packets of cigarette means you have wasted a chance to buy a new PC. Smoking away 50 packets of cigarette means you have wasted a chance to buy a new motorbike. Enough said.

I really don't see how this fits in the going green category except for the color of green, which most lawns already are. I'd think authentic green grass is a lot "greener" for the environment in that it produces oxygen and collects a bit of CO2. Not nearly as much as a single tree mind you, but it certainly does more than chemically manufactured fake turf grass. Oh well.

How do I un-exceed my Roth IRA...
Published (2009-11-23 22:15:00)
Hello: I accidentally put too much money into my (Fidelity) Roth IRA for this year. How do I get the money back to bring me under the limit? Do I act as if I'm 71 y/o and take a distribution? Thanks, T

It's easy, you can either just call Fidelity and tell them that you need to take distribution for excess contributions (just explain it to them). Contributions removed from a Roth are penalty and tax free. Or, you can simply wait until the new tax year and recharacterize that portion of your contribution for the 2010 tax year. No distribution has to be made, but intead the excess will count against your 2010 limit.

I agree with pricespector. If you've been blessed, be sure to help the unfortunate. If you do it for the right reasons, it will come back to you ten fold.

If the sum of a mutual fund's transactions during the year adds up to an overall gain, you'll receive a taxable distribution. That's because funds are required to either pass out all of their gains each year or pay corporate income tax on them. When you get a distribution -- even if you have it reinvested the tax bill becomes yours. And depending on whether the gains were short or long term, ...

Thats a very good point being raised here. When you look beyond the cost of the pack of cigarettes and incorporate all the other monetary costs associated with smoking, you begin to see smoking is a huge drain on ones personal finances.
Studies have also found that smokers earn between 4% to 11% less money than their non smoking counterparts.

After you make the improvements your house should increase in value. So, if your loan is just under what your house is worth now then in 3 years it should be worth considerably more than it is now plus you will have paid on the loan in that time and you will owe less. A hint to paying it down faster is to pay one extra payment per year. The easiest way to do this is to take your monthly payment ...
