If you're over 35 and you are wanting to look like a 20 year old fitness model, you are over-reaching, I think. By trim, I mean a healthy weight, so BMI in the low 20s or so. The "magic" is "eat less and exercise". You need both but the first is more important to keeping weight down. My wife's BMI is around 22, she's in her late 40s and hits the gym probably 5 days of the week. She tracks her...

Sandan Shinsa - Feedback Requested
Published (2009-11-05 17:14:00)
Sometimes people fall over themselves to tell you how bad you are, it's a fact of life. When I passed both my 3rd and 4th dan I had people tell me that my kata was awful. The thing was, these people were already people who I had no respect for.....heh. The people who's opinion mattered (ie my teachers...) said it was passable, but I needed to do xyz. Much better advice. Over the years I have had absolutely everything given to me as...

Kirikaeshi & taking a breath
Published (2009-11-05 22:13:00)
I'm being taught to take 2 breaths during, namely right after taiatari. I don't really know why, though. It does feel like it sort of belongs there, though. It's kinda hard to push yourself to not breathe in until after the second shomen uchi when you do the second taiatari. And so far I can only do 2-3 kirikaeshi in a row with this 2-breath method. If we do more I need to take more breaths inbetween. I'm being encouraged...

Wow - those jail times are quite scary! So what are the rules for being able to possess a "samurai" sword then? (I noticed that was noticably absent from the article - typical for the mass media ...) Are they the same as in the UK?

In my opinion, and this is only my opinion, the sensei was out of line in the way he gave you the information. It is not very good to undermine someones teaching at another dojo like that. Obviously if everyone at your dojo has the same problems with their kata then it is not your fault and you shouldn't be personally made to feel terrible for that - I think it would have been more appropriate ...

Mpst people I know that have had achilles tendon, MCL, ACl and other surgeries have recovered fine and play as well as they ever did. Of course none of them are world class level, but they weren't before their respective surgeries. Regardless, they were/are what I would call advanced. This is true for kendo and other activities as well but is only my view from experience with folks I know. I have...

Its nice that you have so much free time to train in japan. If I had the time I could easily train 12 hours a week or more within a 3 hours or so drive from home but I struggle to even have enough time for 4-6 hours a week of training. Obviously in 'most' other countries one does not have the ability to go to as many practices in Japan. As far as the grading, part of the additional time is due to...

Dick Turpin, brought to justice in York where I believe he was buried [I remember visiting his cell at least], founded by the Romans as Eboracum. Malta is south of Italy, it's 3rd largest [or the smallest] island is Comino where Brendan Gleeson played Menelaus in the film Troy.

I'll attempt to put it as objectively as possible.
The terms shinkendo and iai-jutsu are often used in modern day martial arts in an attempt to cover up a newly invented style, as it allows the teacher to dodge critisisms of "it's not real kendo/iaido". The primary argument against these styles of schools is that the koryu were designed by people who's profession was to kill people with ...

It doesn't have to be, if you want to use a shinai that is shorter you are allowed to, however, longer weapon equals longer reach and a competitive advantage.
