sound files in ubuntu
Published (2009-01-05 12:55:00)
Sometimes, I have troublegetting sound in Ubuntu because my normal user account is not a member of the "audio" group. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail because it's more likely that you need to get mp3 support. Post again if you need any more help.

You can set your ADSL router to give your "crappy" Linux box a static IP. Now, don't worry about the machine being "crappy". Although I use a Core2 Quad for my mailserver, it does a hell of a lot more than simply play about with e-mail! E-mail is extremely processor un intensive! You could easily manage a mailserver on a 386! Anyway, I tried using Postfix but it simply wasn't what I was looking for...

Saikee got me stoked some time ago on Grub hiding for multiple, independent WinOS installs on one hard drive. The Vista installer seems to be a different animal though. I think some of the ones on the bottom, below you and me, are not folding any more. I went up a good ways the other day when I started. I did have to shut my rigs down early this AM. That sorry low down hurricane Dennis put out my lights. My UPS can not last 12 hours. My generator wouldn't crank. I'll beat on it some more later. I started the torture a while ago but I got tired. Code: root@...

!st. bug: I got a message from someone called "funnybunny" -that I never heard of in my life-and asking to send a reply. When I tried to do so I got back a message informing that I wasn't allowed and practically accusing me of trying to use somebody else's privileges. So - what's the big idea? 2nd. bug: I'm boiling mad at Microsoft that in my opinion is an enterprise using its economical...

I have been using SuSE Linux for a long time, but I've never used it in GUI until today. Reason? Because all my available computers were old and did not have graphics capability (to speak of). Today I replaced my Hitachi TravelStar 60 GB with a Hitachi TravelStar 100 GB and cloned the 60 GB to the new drive leaving 40 GB available for Linux! Yeah, team!!! I had a set of Install CDs ...

I am in a debate with some Windiots about whether virtual desktops (multiple desktops) are native to Linux. I know they are but I can't seem to located the supporting documentation. The Windiots say that it's like Windows an add-on. Any ideas where I can find a document or an answer?

A drive running WinXP recently failed on me. All the data is on a Lenny NAS server though, so no real data lost. I have an old dd image of the WinXP partition, so I thought I would mount the dd image on the nas and then share it via samba so I could grab a config file or two as needed while booted into the new WinXP install I'm working on. I'm off site at the moment, but here's basically ...

I love to work with old hardware, partly out of necessity (I live on Social Security Disability) but also because breathing new life into old hardware is a big part of the fun. Well I was down to my junkiest, crappiest, oldest computer, a 500 mhz celeron processor, with 255 mb RAM. Yeah, I said 255; apparently it lost a megabyte somewhere. Well, my neighbor threw out a computer last ...
