arm weight
Published (2009-12-03 05:42:13)
I use the concept of resting one's right hand on the railing of a ship. If they've never been on a ship - let them imagine the railing from the movie "Titanic." Anyhow, there are lots of railings around to practice one. Just let the arm hang from the shoulder and the fingers resting on the railing. Now do that with the bow on the strings. They can start holding the bow in the middle (or wherever) right above the...

...I have had 3 cellos so far. The second was lent to me by a friend, who had bought it for a song in the 1980. It is a Mirecourt, from about 1880, and rather funny looking, because somewhat narrow at the top, stained very dark, and with a 'mustache' (a dark mark across the middle, in the style of the time). However, it is a wonderful instrument. After Laurant Gayraud (a maker in Poitiers, whose #8 cello I now use) refurbished it a...

I got my adjustrite chair from Johnson Strings, but they may not have them now. However if you google "Adjustrite chair" you will get a harp supplier who carries it. I'd try there. For accessories I use cellos2gocom (Ellen G), or lindawest.com (mamawelder) as they are both long time members here, and emmensely generous and knowledgeable people to work with. I buy sheet music from cellos2go.com whenever possible. For...

I have not been buying much equipment lately but I would highly recommend Cellos2Go. EllenG on our discussion board is the proprietor and SHE PLAYS THE CELLO! That is an important feature together with her knowledge that she shares and her wonderful customer service. Check it out at www.cellos2go.com. All of my transactions with Ellen have been exemplary.

"Snootery".......the act of being "snooty" by a luthier that works on instruments usually in the 50K and up catetegory by turning their back on the sub 10K range. Its in the dictionary........really.

And now for the truly adventurous: http://search1.taobao.com/browse/0/n-g,wtz4zyoh3e----------------40--commend-0-all-0.htm?ssid=e-s5&at_topsearch=1 This is a Chinese website - most of the big factories that produce cello accessories advertise on here to sell direct to the Chinese public. It can be a gold mine - if you want you can put the whole site through Google Translate and navigate it in English - but you'll need a chinese...

Great idea for a Christmas gift! My mother's dog has extremely thick and coarse fur and she is always struggling to remove loose hairs. I think this may be a perfect solution.

my teacher brings up "pronating" the arm--that is, rotating the arm so that the weight of the arm is rotated into the bow and onto the contact point
between the bow and the string.

Well, there's practicing and there's practicing. You don't say if you have a teacher or not, but feedback from a knowledgeable professional
who's in the same room as you would be highly advisable.
Certainly it's possible to practice unproductively -- repeating the same mistakes until they become ingrained. OTOH, it's also possible that
you're doing such good, focused work that you're ...

I don't belong here: hit the "button" accidentally - and I just can't resist the urge!
After 2 years of cello, I was 16 and was had finished working on the Haydn D major concerto. Just to burst some bubbles! But to be fair, by then I had also
been playing violin for 12 years - and that made a bit difference in the speed with which I adapted to cello playing. At the time I had a gigantic ...

What I find entertaining is the fact that, assuming the hacked logs are semi-accurate, the people involved left documented communication instructing each other
to delete information. Firstly, if you're going to instruct someone to destroy documents, you don't do it in a documented format. Secondly, I guess
they didn't get the memo that electronic information can almost always be recovered, even ...

Try to have a budget in mind for cello, bow and case and then see what shops have in that price range. There are cello makers who have
"professional" cellos priced at $2000 and there are makers who have $5000 in their "student" category. So the names are pretty irrelevant
in the grand scheme of things, and only indicate within a specific brand what their hierarchy is.
There are lots and ...

Depends on what you're looking for. I play with an indie rock band. The transition took some time, but I've become much better at improve and the
writing process. If you're looking to keep with classical maybe you could post on local classifieds, craig's list, kijiji, or newspaper/ buyer flyer
type things, and maybe start a chamber group. See if there's a local online forum where musicians post.

ooh, i'm glad to hear you have a basement playroom for them.
i didn't mean to imply that your house would stink b/c you didn't keep up after them. Maybe it's Chessie's fur type, but I can smell cat when I
come home from work and there's been no air movement in the house. Simon, even though he was angora, had much more silky fur on top of his wooly. I
don't think smell clung to him as much....

- Could be my computer, but the # was on the wrong side of the C on the A string. I this also happened with a few other notes. The F# on the C string, I think
was one of them.
- It would be beneficial to have the different enharmonic equivalents show up, like Eb/D#.
- This one's really important, I think, and would be the defining factor ...
