As a 20-something who does know all about what the comparisons are, I couldn't agree more. When people say that about my work, I take it as a compliment even if they don't intend it to be.

Boy, wouldn't we have loved to have seen that, huh? I wonder if Allen knows James Lipton, personally. He must. He knows darn near everyone else, in NYC personally ... ______________________ R.I.P., Brittany Murphy

Best Decade for Allen?
Published (2009-12-19 15:46:00)
It's hard because each decade has its highs and lows. Woody is a very unpredictable film-maker that can disappoint one year and then astound the same audience 12 months later. --- My Latest Move Reviews: http://www.invocus.net

more from the Woodman

He spends his time listening to Marcel Marceau records. He once had the Dairy Queen franchise for Alaska. In college he majored in Black Studies. He was breast-fed on falsies.

The man lives in his own little world, is isolated from reality, lives behind the times and thus has no idea how the average person talks. And it shows in his work.

Best Decade for Allen?
Published (2009-12-21 04:19:00)
The '80s are his best decade - there's a lyricism and poetry to his direction which disappeared in the '90s.

Some of this was funny, and true, but I think the writer took the article way too seriously. The obvious and shallow insights of Woody Allen got annoying and boring fast.
Shelly Duvall's line about Bob Dylan was a winner.

So - you want Woody Allen to turn into another person?
That won't happen - he's Woody Allen and will write about what he knows, which, in case you haven't heard the cliche yet, is always the best idea for any writer.
The problems with Woody's output in the last 10 years, which have been improving of late, are due to a lot of different ones - familiar themes isn't one of them.

I'm sorry, I can't help but comment on how stupid and unoriginal this list is. They obviously don't want to say Annie Hall is his best, because its his most famous, it was his huge breakthrough, and its the only one which won the best picture. Manhattan is amazing, and people love to say its better than Annie Hall, just so they can go with something different, yet something that is still really ...

You answered your own question, essentially. The finished product is all Woody wants you to judge the film by.
However, if you do want to learn more about the films, including what was edited out of them or changed or the stories behind making them, purchase Conversations With Woody Allen by Eric Lax, which gives deep insight into the background of Woody's films. It is like a Criterion ...

Charlize Theron

Daniel Day Lewis (A little if-y about that one)

I would agree with you on the 90's, and I would include 1989's Crimes and Misdemeanors in that group. The 90's were when everyone held their breath to see what Woody would put out next. I think he was financed by Tri Star and Orion back then, and he was still acting in his own films.
