Gandalf didn't even know his own name - can you expect him to remember a detail like Saruman digging up trees? When Aragorn calls him Gandalf, he says "Yes, that was the name. I was Gandalf." (anyway, it's different in the books - the Ents already knew what Saruman was doing; they didn't need Pippin to persuade them) You are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all.

How does sam stay fat?
Published (2009-12-01 16:57:00)
Sam was in his late 30s. Bilbo was 50. Neither were young to warrant "thin-ness". Late 30's in hobbit years would be mid-20's in human years, whereas 50 in hobbit years would be about 32 in human years. That could make a difference. Besides I don't think it's necessary to go by Tolkien's drawing, just so long as, like you said, they're depicted in a way that isn't contradictory to text....

One for the ladies/ gay men:...

I think that's a fair observation. I crushed on Leggy as a 14-year-old but now I think Aragorn is the hotter character. ps you're not allowed to pick Sean Bean. Damn. David Wenham then?

Ooops. Many thanks. Tough when you are your own editor to catch each slip. I think he is surely a villain, just a more complicated on then most.

Well Tolkien was writing a mythological history of the Earth, not some "other-world". And while his world is pre-Christian (and pre-pagan) Tolkien was a Catholic. So he would have envisioned man's ultimate destiny as compatible with the Christian vision of man's destiny.

The Nazgul are more powerful. The orcs feared them, and Sauron, much more than the ghosts of the dead.
And they came to Gondor's aid. That was their oath. It was fulfilled. Their oath wasn't to fight until all the wars were ended.

Actually, it took them some time to develop weapons - not because they were stupid, but because they didn't need them. But when they did, they actually had full knowledge of them. That was some 10.000 years before the events of the movie. Aragorn's sword is not 3000 years old, but actually 6000-ish.
They didn't invent gunpowder because maybe the materials were unavailable? ...

Legolas. I love his long blonde hair and his blue eyes.
He is so hot, I just love him.
Don't get me wrong, Aragorn is pretty hot himself. He's just not Legolas...

They ate with Faramir (in the book anyway. I'm assuming they did in the movie too, we just didn't see it). He ate the rabbit stew. No, wait, in the movie they never got to eat it. He's a big guy. It still takes awhile to drop a lot of weight, and you never lose it where you want to. Also, we don't know the properties of lembas bread, so we don't know it's physiological effects.
And Sam did ...

When third age ended all half elves choose between mortality or immortality. Elves that desided to stay at middle earth loosed immortality. It did not matter what the reason was. I think it was Valar that took immortality away leaving only mortal "part".

No. I love Richard Armitage, North and South is possibly my favorite movie, but I love David Wenham so much in The Lord of the Rings. Faramir is my favorite character in this movie, and David Wenham is fantastic, especially if you have the extended edition.
I'm sure Richard Armitage would have made a good Faramir...but David Wenham made a perfect Faramir.

Now, now, be grateful for the existence of "Twilight" and its fans.
Because of it all the dumbest, least stable fangurls have left all the other fandoms, and are flocking together in one place, bothering no-one but themselves.

Well, technically Gollum is a villain, but It's a deep and great character, lovely sometimes but hateble almost all the time. In the end, If it wouldn't have been for him, the Ring wouldn't have been destroyed, so at the end he was unintentionally the "hero".
