Also, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone could convince me that I'd missed something in the film. I think it's extremely difficult to change someone's mind once it has been made up regarding a movie. If I could make you like Oldboy somehow, I'd be thrilled, but I don't see that happening; you have a pretty entrenched perspective of the movie, and I actually do understand where you're coming from...

Woo-jin then describes how hypnosis was used to make Dae-su faint in the restaurant. So yes, their first meeting was arranged by hypnosis, but my understanding is that the falling in love part was up to them.

For example the corridor scene (one of my favorite scenes of all time) is done so well it sends shivers down my spine. When Oh Dae-su is looking through the photo album (the music added with it always gets me), and the ending when Mido says "I love you Oh Dae-su" and the music kicks at such good timing... it sends shivers down my spine. I watched the DVD extras last night, and they said he had to do about 5 takes, each time with a different octopus. It was very real, and there'd be some intense whining about it if it had been done in Hollywood. Great scene though

Does Dae Su really has any other option other than begging for mercy? He knows, and we know, that telling Mido the truth would completely destroy her, and Dae Su obviously doesn't want that. It's a painful scene to watch, but that's the point of it.

It was ambiguous to me too. I'd never heard of abdominal swelling in false pregnancy, just a halting of the period, but wikipedia says it is common.
I'm leaning towards her actually being pregnant, but it could go either way.

Makes me sick to see this movie stuck on 8.3 when average films like The Dark Knight and Ingloroius Basterds are way up there.
Oldboy is one of the best films ever made, bar none. And doesn't get the respect it deserves. Acting, direction, cinematography, script, soundtrack - all 10/10's.

I recently got the soundtrack, and it's called 'The Old Boy', also the song 'In a lonely place' shares alot of the same melodies and style. Very amazing scene isn't it. It's probably the most realistic one vs crowd fight. It's somewhat sloppy and they actually lose their breath and get tired. Although you probably already know this, it was done all in one take, which makes it all the more amazing...

I agree completely.
I love the very opening where the song builds up over the company names and A Chan-wook park film and then hits as the roof top scene starts.
Also the scene where Dae-su enters the elevator and is trying to get the password.

Yes and no.
It's a stand-alone film. You don't *need* to watch any other film to understand it. It's not like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings in that respect.
