You can get hurt even just brushing up against a shark, since a shark's skin is very prickly. Thing about getting hit by a cactus. You would have to be a masochist of the highest order to enjoy getting attacked by one.

Daniel Day Lewis is probably the only actor who could pull off Quint. For Mayor Vaughn, I'd say Brad Leland (Buddy Garrity from Friday Night Lights). If he could switch his Texas accent to a New England one, he'd be absolutely perfect for that character. I'm not sure who I'd pick to play the shark.

You would need a very intelligent and talented producer, director, screenwriter, and cast to pull it off--that is, they would develop a notably original variation of the movie Jaws instead of the same movie cast with women--just as Spielberg & co. created a notably original variation of Peter Benchley's novel. Sir John Rossman Knight Of The Jersey Shore Owner and Proprietor Of The Laughing Loon Inn *Absolutely loves Jaws as a film and as a story that is brilliantly told from the perspective of the writing, the acting, and the music and all else that went into it.* The chemistry of all the actors on screen together, especially Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and last but not least Robert Shaw was terrific. Yes. And not only that, it also has the greatest opening title/theme music just preceeding that first attack. Powerful but also short and to the point. The opening titles don't go on and on, just BANG then we are at the beach and Chrissy gets eaten.

There is nothing wrong with the original. If Hollywood has taught us anything, its that 99% of all remakes are not only inferior to the originals, but also crappy as stand alone films.

Well it's definitely not to 'kill time'.
Quint's story is a piece of clever background info on him, giving him a reason why he hunts sharks. The drunken scene in general also helps to 'soften' Quint slightly and Hooper kind of lets up on him after that. Times have changed. It would be impossible to rival Jaws and the concept of monster shark is now old. Sure, plenty of people are still fightened to death of sharks but any new shark movie will never have the same impact as Jaws did 35 years ago.
Run for it's money? A new movie would have to make getting towards 2 billion, because Jaws made getting towards 2 billion (inflation adjusted). ...
