The New World pretty much sucked so that's no great achievement. "PLEASE DON'T DATE ME! I PROMISE I'LL WORK HARDER!"

It's definitely better on a second viewing and yes, the trailers made it out to have lots of action. Those darn trailer making dudes. You're terribly late you know...Naughty! Mad Hatter 3/5/2010

I agree. It's probably the most underrated film since The New World .

Loved the scene in the phone room.

Dillinger and his ilk were a dying breed...but a more interesting one than the wire-service mafia. These guys didn't want to be businessmen. They didn't want to sit in chairs like executives...they wanted the fast life. They were the last in the lineage of Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, and the classic 19th Century outlaws.

Best Line in the Whole Movie

Melvin Purvis was hilarious. "What did he say?" "Who was it? Dillinger?" Not the best lines but I like: "See you down the road." "gotta get yourself another line of work, Melvin." "....tell him he may call me J.E."

Worst Movie of the Year? Or just...

The films ambitions are so morally confused and arguably regressive that for me, it is the worst film I've seen this year. Granted, I've only seen about a dozen or so that were released in 2009.

Overall I liked the movie, as most films are not 100% historically accurate I don't mind too much little historical inaccuracies in films a few in this did bother me. Possible SPOILER: Specifically the fact that Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson are killed during the film whereas in reality both died several months after Dillinger was killed. Also irritating was the fact that in the film nearly all of Dillinger's crew are killed...

This HD look sucks so bad it's a pain in the ass! How can any director with only a bit common sense make such a decision?
PUBLIC ENEMIES shot on classic film would be such a masterpiece but this way it looks like sh*t!!!

Exactly. The wobble was terrible. It was sloppy. It added nothing. The use of HD instead of film made the movie (at times) look like a cheap made for TV movie, or worse, a reenactment you might see on a crime show. I LOVED the flash of the guns and some of the shots in the forest but other than that I didn't like the use of HD. And believe me, I was disappointed that I didn't like the HD because ...

Glad you enjoyed PE!
Loved reading your story/history. Very interesting that you had family that were part of the Little Bo shoot out. That's kind of funny about Dillinger's ExLax tin.

Yeah, efen, I'm an idiot. That must be why I'm a Mensa member, and you could not pass the entrance exam for Kindergarten.
You know, as much as I am happy about the expansion of the internet, it stinks that now message boards are wasted with mental midgets like yourself, but I digress.
Who would I have cast as Dillinger? Guy Pearce would have worked. Pearce at least resembles Dillinger. I ...

Correctomundo on all counts. Give yourself a treat and beg, borrow, or steal " Dillinger" (1973) about the Myth & Legend of Dillinger, to see how it should have been made if you are going to fudge the facts anyway.
It fleshes out the "enemies", creates a larger than life symbolic Purvis, and doesn't give you the typical Hollywood formula job.

Oh definitely, Hollywood schmaltz, and the sad part, its all part of the general pussification of America, a younger demographic movie audience where no real sex is allowed, effete actors playing hard boiled leads, current fashion trends that shave all pubies so that everyone looks pre pubescent, way to go lemmings, keep awarding the BS and we'll get more of it.

What is 'true' is that Dillinger became a mythical legend: there are just as many false stories about him as true. (And the true stories are vague and conflicting.)
--And it's true that his crime spree was only one year and that the essential story of this movie is 100% true and that certain scenes go BEYOND historically accurate by being filmed on the exact spot (eg. Little Bohemia, jail, ...

Joe,
It's b/c Mann said himself that he recuts every film he's ever made, even after the final theatrical release. As you'll notice with most of his dvd releases there is a 'director's cut' & usually a 'theatrical cut'. I assume with this ' Public Enemies' release the 2 disc edition is like his director's cut. MAYBE? I mean I'm just guessing...
I hope this helps.
I have the 2 disc set, ...

I'd have to say, you have a rather odd notion of what the "atmosphere" of "Public Enemies" really is, if you think that the discredited "they killed a double" theory would actually fit in with the rest of the, um, atmosphere.
Dillinger survived as long as he did as much by blind luck as by cunning or power per se. Both in real life and in the movie, he is correct, for a certain point in his ...

She wore an orange skirt with an off-white blouse, almost identical to the outfit shown in "Public Enemies." The reason she has gone down in history otherwise may be:
