Either they had tense nerves or they became suspicious of him.
Their response is natural, since they had no knowledge of anyone coming to the safehouse and should suspect anyone arriving
unannounced, knovn or stranger, of being a risk to the plan.
The answer to your other question is that the acting goes to extreme in this movie at times.
I just wonder about the eighth man.
