I agree, so why all the uproar on these boards about this film being unsuitable for children? It might not appeal to every one of them, but can you name a film that appeals to every single adult? Children, like adults, are individuals. The Dude Abides...

While people argue the book Coraline came first.. i very much doubt the film makers of PL had read it.. possibly not even being awear of it.. i didn't know of Coraline until this film. So i don't think you can accuse anyone are ripping or copying anyone off.. (for those that do) Similarities sure but it's very universal.. any film with a young girl and a fantasy world is going to be in this category.. but it all started i...

because men are physically stronger and their hormones make them more impulsive to sexual needs. To elaborate, if women get aroused, they get aroused. If men get aroused, they want to put it in action. For women, even if they are really horny and crazed and they try to rape men, they can't do it if men don't want to. For men, it's another thing altogether. It doesn't take a really horny and sex depraved man to transform...

May I point out that, in the vast majority of cases, rape is nothing to do with either provocation by the victim or sexual arousal in the perpetrator. Rape is primarily an act of violence and the fact that it is a sex act is almost irrelevant and certainly nothing to do with normal sexuality. Rape is not about sexual pleasure but subjugation and humiliation and is something that no-one who isn't deeply disturbed would ever contemplate.

What's with females aged 45+?
Published (2009-12-04 05:14:00)
Wait, so the going theory is, people who enter random numbers and get above 45 dislike movies more then people who put in random numbers and get less then 45? L2Math A more likely explanation is a mix of conservitism and well... stats. You'll find males over 45 rate films low as well. Generally old people dislike these "newer" films. Females obviously tend to be more conservative then males. Probably cause traditionally...

30 year old male. Loved it. :-) It's not always bad if kids get scared once in a while. When I was a kid, I loved (and still do) 'the last unicorn'. The harpy, the red bull and the skeleton scared the living crap out of me. But it helped me understand the world of myths and fiction and really sparked my interest for fantasy tales. 'Coraline' may be scary, but it also transports an important message. Kids should be...

I agree. The "help us" scene is wonderfully creepy, and really disturbed me when I first saw this in theatres.
The other scene that I found disturbing was the "Playing Piano" scene, in which the Other Father is hitting notes on the piano at random when Coraline comes in. Especially "He pulled a loooooong face... and Mother didn't like it ."
I don't frighten easily, but those scenes freaked...

I think that was part of the point. By the end of the movie she's nicer and seems to be much more interested in the people around her. Her experience in the other world was supposed to cause a character change in her. Kinda like Chihiro in Spirited Away.

They show how they did it on the DVD. Yeah, smoke was filmed separately, then composited into the shot.
Also surprising was that when the doll is burning on the fireplace, the fire was actually 2d hand-drawn animation, and not a computer effect :]

My mom (aged 54) rarely likes any films out these days, though to be fair my father isn't much different. I think that women 45+ are often more conservative and easily offended than most other groups. I don't want to generalize though, but I've just noticed that from people I've known. As for under 18, well teenage girls just don't have good taste in general. The 18-29 group seems to have the ...

Sure, titles like 'When the wind blows' are wonderful examples of good animation films for adults. Besides, I think that 'Nightmare before Christmas' and ' Coraline' are for adults as well as children.
The old fairytales came from folk tales. People told each other about the little girl with the red riding hood in a dangerous forest, and about a snow white princess with an evil stepmother. The...

Wow, I never thought of it that way! I agree, I wasn't offended by the scene, heck it was hilarious! But it's true, why are only guys allowed to walk around without shirts on. Though I must say I wouldn't want to walk around topless, don't feel comfertable about it, I must agree that there is a certain discrimination about this. What exactly the problem is? I don't know I'm afraid, it's just ...

it's true.
there is nothing unnatural or wrong about sex or the human body, yet in America, they act as if there is, and they just become a super-repressed society.
the outrage that occurs in that country about these sort of things is crazy. "my child will be damaged forever because he saw a breast! OMG!!!"
they don't seem to have any problems with violence though.

Yes the theme of the story is very common, Chronicles of Narnia is another one like it. I do however agree there is also some aesthetic similarities with Pan Labryinth, just the overall mood and tone. PL however is clearly not a children's film as there are scenes of torture and other things not appropriate in a children's film.

Musicals are appropriate for some animated movies. I mean, imagine The Nightmare Before Christmas without the wonderful singing. But for Coraline...no. I think it worked better as a non-musical. There was certainly music, but it was not a musical. Songs did not help convey the story.

btw, i think it's not for children becasue they show Coraline killing lizards like they are nothing at all. I don't want any nice child to idolize her and starts to be cruel like her and thinks it's cool.
