Now of course you'll think it's ridiculous, because you're looking at the cat. That's why Schrödinger put the cat in a box. When the box is closed, you can't observe it. Just like you can't observe the single atom. So if you don't watch the cat, is it in the half-alive half-dead state? This is the part nobody told me. I always just assumed that the box was made of clear pexiglass or something. That...

Opening Scene Significance

Good post, mcsushi. I remember the conversation Gopnik had with the Korean. The student claimed that he "understood the cat". Gopnik, later admitting that HE didn't really understand the cat, says that you "can't understand the physics without the math". This furthers the line you took in the post. As for buddy Andy's Lebowski comment, I dealt with this, or something similar to this on the...

(possibly minor spoilers) at least the first two weren't wearing yamakas, i'm not sure about the third one that only his son got to see. was this intentional by the coen brothers or am i incorrect in thinking that rabbis normally wear yamakas?

Your Top 5 of 2009?

1. A Serious Man 2. Where The Wild Things Are 3. Inglourious Basterds 4. The Hurt Locker 5. Moon The Wrestler and Slumdog Millionaire would go above A Serious Man since they came out in 2009 in the UK, but I am not counting them because they were considered in last years awards season.

Try the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible instead of the King James Version (KJV), which most people are probably familiar with (and which I am guessing you are using). The NRSV (from Oxford University Press) is based on the KJV, but is written with more modern, and more accurate language. The KJV is more beautiful to the ear, but then again it was written in the time of Shakespeare, when the art of the written word in English...

People walked out..
Published (2009-12-24 17:31:00)
There's a tendency on the IMDB for people to snort derisively "Huh! You just didn't get it! I'm cleverer than you". I'm trying not to sound like that here, I'm just baffled as to why someone would WALK OUT of this. Some may have found it slow-paced and lacking in development but surely it wasn't offensive enough to walk out of? I've been bored to tears and praying for the end of a movie to...

Poland, actually.
The film begins with a man who might be a Dybbuk and ends with a man who might be Schroedinger's cat: two characters stuck in a state of uneasy balance between life and death.

They ignore A Serious Man but they give nominations to forgettable fare like Julia & Julia and awards bait like Nine ? I am officially going to hate the Globes next year. The Hollywood Foreign Press is totally selling out: they're not welcoming innovation.
What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter.

You might find the quantum suicide thought experiment interesting too.
That is interesting, but what is it with quantum mechanics and these grim, unsettling, sadistic thought-experiments? First, there's cat murder, then there's suicide. What's next, a "child rape" thought experiment?
In any case, your reply was really quite helpful. I get it now, thank you.

Maybe the noise and uncertainty are part of the message? ;-)
How many words does it really take to say " do unto others"?
