Maybe some of these folks would accept a rousing action-filled spectacle of a crucifixion to match that of the chariot race....there's just too many pointless dull spots that slow down this story! Happy family re-unifications were becoming passé by then anyway, what with a similarly sappy ending before in "It's a Wonderful Life"...

I cannot believe that the OP would want the movie to end after the chariot race, it would have been ridiculous to end the movie at that point. Heston had to find salvation through The Lord, or else all we would have been left with would be the winner of a race, and a very twisted and bitter winner, at that!

Any non-Christians enjoy this?
Published (2009-12-05 02:07:00)
You're kidding? For God's sakes. I'm Jewish and just because Charlton Heston was a gun toting racist bigot flunky for the N.R.A. doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the Lew Wallace Classic brought to screen. I liked The Robe, too. Ever see that one? Does one have to be a Christian to enjoy Ernest Thesinger, Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, and the great Caligula impersonator (better than John Hurt of I Claudius),...

Hmmm . . . Amazing how effectively a "gun toting racist bigot flunky for the N.R.A." can play a sword toting anti-Roman flunky for the F.C.J.A.L. (First Century Jewish Anti-defamation League). In addition, I find it difficult to grasp how a "racist bigot" can find himself marching alongside (and helping to organize) M.L. King's historic march on Washington at a time when to do so was extremely risky...

>could you have both? rearrange all the elements but place the chariot race at the end? __________________________________________________ Could you? Well, yes, you could. But why on earth would you want to? The movie really is *Not* about Judah getting revenge. Besides - if you did that, then the folks who think the movie should have ended after the chariot race would simply say that it ended great, but it should have had the middle...

"The point of the film was for Ben-Hur to defeat Messala and return home and he did just that."

I wouldn't call myself a Christian, even though I'm religious, because I'm not sure about who Jesus was. But the Christian elements in this movie are supposed to be there. There might be a bit too much Christian talk in the end, during the crucifiction scene, but in the context of this movie, it's not a big deal.

Warner originally planned to put it on Blu-Ray this year for the 50th anniversary, but decided not to so that they could create a new 1080p transfer for the movie, as the previous Blu-Ray transfer got a lot of negative attention.
It will probably come out next year, but I'm glad to see Warner is taking their time to make a newer, better transfer - and I think we'll all be pleased with the ...

I think Lancaster turned it down because he was an atheist and didn't want to do any film promoting the Christian faith.
As to Brando, he would have been superb in the role. I am a Heston fan (great respect for him both on and off the screen), and Mr. Heston was marvelous as Judah. Heston was dedicated, patient, hard-working, and could take direction. However, despite his eccentricities (...

Very well done. The music you used worked fine- but without a touch of Rozsa's magnificent soundtrack the trailer felt a bit incomplete. Good job though.

This is pathetic? It's actually your TV that is pathetic. This was meant to be shown on a cinema screen with a 2.76:1 aspect ratio. Alas, that's too wide for most people to view at home, but most of us are grateful that DVDs are made with original aspect ratios.
