Who says it must breathe? The fact that we see and hear the queen clearly breathing and vocalizing several times when Ripley encounters her would suggest that she requires oxygen (or a gas of some sort). The alien in the original film was heard breathing as well and it's also established that the facehuggers feed their victim's oxgygen while they are incapacitated suggesting that they as well breath oxygen. It's all...

According to Burke, the Colonial Marines are the elite, but Gorman's unit was just tore up from the floor up. Of course, they were probably badass at putting down colonial rebellions and things like that - Apone and Hicks and Drake and Vasquez and Ferro and Frost seemed like competent soldiers. But I doubt anyone could have been prepared for going into that coccoon. All the most reason they should have sent Bishop!

Well if it's ANY consolation, The DarkHorse Comic series have show that The Alien CAN survive in a HARD vacuum for an extended period of time---I don't know if it's canonical or not but does fall under the category of showing the Alien to be a 'tough sunuvabitch'.... NM

I see. So how would a magic, naturally-occurring mist behave like that? Watch the movie again: it gives a very distinct buzzing noise. It should be clear to anyone that it was intentional, and not a plot hole-inducing "wrong noise" as you so ludicrously suggest. Nothing to say about my second point?

What's with the smoking?

You could argue that there is not guarantee that the ciggies shown in the film are the same poison sticks that you have today (or in the eighties) for all we know they might be some sanitised substitute and you have to smoke a lot of them to get any effect. Plus there might also be the WTF attitude that there is more likelyhood of getting killed in the Colonial Marines before the poisons in the cigarettes catch up with you.

Burke, the "Company Guy", requested members of the colony to investigate previously unexplored areas of the planet. He did this AFTER Ripley was rescued but before Burke and Gorman requested her assistance. In those few weeks things got crazy on the planet.

I think the eggs are able to "hibernate" and become dormant for extreme periods of time. It is never really explained, but after all, they are "alien" aren't they? Also some theories suggest that the blue film in the derelict ship covering the eggs helped to preserve them.
And there was no queen laying eggs on the derelict ship. The chamber of eggs is actually the rest of the space jockey crew...

I think the true question is :
Why LV-426?
What is the Space Jockey ship doing on such a wasted ball like LV-426?

This is clearly explained in Alien/Aliens.
I'm just not sure where.

Well, i think the plan was to go there to impregnate someone and leave. Those "marines" could be just some local expendable dropouts with minimum training. The Company might already knew that place was overrun by aliens, so they sent a team on a suicide mission, just to bring back some baby aliens.

At the time, the Aliens arcade game (by Konami) seemed pretty good. Though looking back now, playing it on MAME, it's really just like Golden Axe but with guns.

My god you are all over the boards tonight, picking apart the details. Maybe you should have condensed all of your complaints into one post so I didn't have to follow you around.
As for this question, take a look at the FAQ entry for this movie, it has a pretty detailed explanation behind some theories on this issue.

Queen jumps on ship because landing gear gets caught and door is left open. Then rides the whole way back with them (hiding?) in the back of the ship with Hicks without anyone noticing. Thats the part thats hard to believe.
Well that's actually not what happend. Watch the scene again! She apparently hitched a ride on the dropship by riding in the landing gear compartment. She somehow was ...

As far as the Marines were concerned, they weren't sent in there to fight a planet full of aliens. They were sent in to find out why the company had lost contact with the colonists. They don't know what's going on, so they send in a scout platoon. The military isn't going to risk an entire company or squadron when they have no idea what they're dealing with. They're going to recon the area and if...
