He is respected because he invented the talk show as it exists today and he is responsible for some of the most inventive and revolutionary moments in television history. As both Conan O'Brien and Jon Stewart have noted, everybody in the business is doing the kind of show that Letterman created.

If you sleep with someone where you work, you get fired? If that's so, that's a silly rule. If a teacher sleeps with a pupil, that's one thing, but if both are adults and if they both wanted it, then it's nothing for others to care about. It oughtn't be, at least.
But hey, in the US, just having sex will propably be rewarded with the death penalty anytime soon, now.
