Demo aka demographic group is part of the audience within the 18 to 49 age. It's also the most important part of the audience, because the networks can ask for the highest ad rates for them.
So it's very important for a show to perform well within this age group, rather than have bigger audience but extremly old skewing.

Well, we officially have our very own troll.
But to attempt to answer the original question in a very general way... a 'safe' show, i guess you could say, would have 7-10 million give or take depending on the time slot and the network. Chuck pulled in about 6 million each episode last season.
Although, there seem to be much more qualified people that really know what they're talking ...

Muh...It's nothing we didn't know or figured. We know they will end up together in the end the creators said so at the con.

It's Chuck. I don't care how big of a Sarah fan you are (and I like her too) there's no way you could watch this show and be confused about who the main character is.
Is Sarah a strong second? Of course. But she's definitely second. Then Casey and Morgan (In Season 1 I'd say Morgan was 3rd, in Season 2 it was more Casey), then Ellie and Awesome. Then Jeff and Lester. Then Big Mike. Then Anna.
