New Lab Pup Next Week! Couple...

A full size crate with a divider is the best. Must use a divider or pup will use half the crate as an outhouse. he should be able to fully stand and turn around but that's all. I feed adult food to my new pups as the nutritional content is almost the same but you get a lot more for your money. I've always played fetch. Never seemed to hurt retrieving birds later. Remember pup is a baby. Don't punish pup for peeing etc. in the...

Dog House Barrels on Stand
Published (2009-11-24 18:52:00)
I built some Chris, and used 2 1/2 pvc, not sure what size that is, one option is to screw through the bottom of the barrell into the pipe, one other option is to put another cross piece of pvc in the front and back across the barell, either way I found out after about a year you have some pieces that fall apart, now that may be due to my lack of construction skills .....but they arenice and do work pretty good. GSP pup and an untrained human!
Published (2009-11-25 22:10:00)
I will second the recommendation of Paul Long's book. It is inexpensive and very simplistic and easy to understand. Although alot of it is the old style of training. Other than that, it sounds like you are doing most everything right so far. It sounds as though you have a dog with very good natural instincts and good prey drive, which are the main ingredients that go into making a bird dog. Charlie

She is 8 months old, still a puppy. Training may take a couple of years after she is past the puppy stage. Sounds like you are well started but she is quite young to expect too much consistantly from her. An e-collar may be the answer in a few months but for now think I would try a real light extension on the CC she is dragging and see if you can get close enough to control her. At this point ...

honky tonk bred ep would be my pick He needs to really understand the differences between the two breeds....I will let someone else chime in there as I dont know if I can do that topic justice, but very few are as stylish moving and breath taking on point as the honky tonk dogs. jmo Mine (below) is a perfect lady in the house and sweet as sugar.

a pair of quail make a great mount. Smooth the feathers and clean any blood off. You can use an old silk sock (holes on both ends)to slide over the bird to keep the feathers in place for freezing.

Well, I still use heart guard plus, but I make sure that I use any coupons or rebates that are available and my vet will price match the online offers that I find. For flea and tick, I use Hartz ultra guard and have never had a problem. Giving my own shots, except rabies as utah law requires that be given by a vet, saves me about $25 a dog. I do make sure that my dogs see the vet once a year. The...

Finally! Someone with a question about the food that I feed. I have never talked on this forum about Sportmix that I can remember. I feed it currently and have fed it for a long time. It seems to be a good hearty food that provides all the energy performing dogs need, it has always been great for my dogs...

So lets just get this straight so we understand. Your hunting your dog on wild birds. He goes on point. Then he breaks point and flushes them before you get there? Have you trained the dog to know what "Whoa" means? Are you telling the dog "whoa" and he is ignoring you?

There is no doubt that the Tracker and other telemetry systems will work at much greater ranges than the Garmin. I do not have a Garmin, but I have never had reliable radio communication at more than a mile in any of the area where my wife and I hunt game birds.

Any new dog you deal with should be approached with caution. Meaning start out with them like you would a puppy, intro to guns, birds, and collar to see what their reaction is. Because a guy says a dog is something doesnt mean it is.

I assume you are hunting pheasants. I use Winchester steel 3 inch 1 1/4 ounce 3 shot. We hunted lots of state and federal lands that required steel. I was doing so well shooting steel, I kept using it even on private land. I didn't want to change from lead to steel every time we got out of the truck, so I just stayed with the steel. It has good range and is fast.
