Backfireing
Published (2009-11-23 12:26:00)
Can you give some history of the car? (Mileage, modifications, etc.) Often, if one of these cars starts to backfire, it is a sign that the cam has a lobe that is being rounded down. Given that zinc is being put in oil is lesser amounts, older (yes, these cars are 22+ years old) cars need to have a ZDDP additive added to the oil otherwise cam failure will result. The question is, is it really backfiring, or is the car simply missing on one (or...

Thanks for your response. The Car has 90k Old Casper Dial Chip set at 3, Do not know how it is programmed. Would not pass AZ emissions in the 3 setting, passed in the 1 & 2 setting. 2 sets of injectors, but not sure which are stock and which are upgraded. New Fuel Filter, Original Pump Battery is new. Alternator may have been replaced in early 90's. I do not have file with me. No indications that I can tell the voltage is off. Can...

It's disassembled, heads have been redone, front cover has a new Melling pump (Lou Czarnota), block will clean up easily at 30 over, has intake, valve covers, oil pan, PS pump, and more. If intersted, PM me. Mike

That's going to be pretty much impossible to get ... GM didn't keep those types of statistics. Compound that with the fact the Turbo Regals were built on the same assembly line as all the other G bodies (Montes, Cutlasses, Regals, etc.) and it's pretty much something lost in the mists of time. They just weren't tracked separately, unfortunately.

Other than it being an '87 GN, can you give us some details on the combo? Any modifications?
Do you have a scan tool? Fuel pressure gauge? Any recent changes? Have your fuel pump or fuel filter been changed since the car was new?

It is possible. I would get out a meter and check all the circuits as much as possible (including the fuses, as they can be deceptive). Fusible links are essentially sections of smaller wire placed in line with a larger wire that will fail first in a large current draw happens. Get down by the starter and examine them to see if any look melty-melty. A good old-style parts store may have bonafide ...

My car is leaving black soot marks on the ground under both exhaust pipes. I don't own a scanner. Last time I had it plugged into one the only thing that was weird is that the IAC Motor kept going to position zero.

Sources include Limit Engineering, Precision Turbo & Engine, etc. They aren't that hard to obtain.
Is it the wastegate actuator you are trying to check, or the wastegate flapper? Neither of these would indicate a "bad turbo", BTW.
The Buicks are pretty unique to having this three bolt exhaust flange. The late-70s and early-80s Pontiac Turbo Trans Ams may have used them on their carbed ...

Can you get any numbers from the chip (sticker on the chip) or the injectors? Maybe include a picture of both if possible?
That throttle body seems awfully large, and the converter a wee bit small, for your combo.
Many like the Turbo Tweak ( Eric Marshall) chips. With the details you've provided, he should be able to give you exactly what you are looking for. See http://www.turbotweak....

I recently acquired a clean all original 87GN w/T-tops, only 59K miles.
I replaced the ignition pack and plus with OEM parts, and it seems to drive/run pretty good... but smells rich and also doesn't want to shift into 3rd very easily w/out letting off the gas.
My mechanic has given it a once-over, with the scanner, and said it all appear to be operating normally - but I would like a GN ...
