What Bogie says is right. What Kevin says is right, too. If you have no other choice but to chroma key in HDV, you'll pretty much have to resign yourself to crummy-looking edges on your keys, as Bogie says. Why? HDV has lousy color resolution. It's just as bad as DV's color resolution. So what's color resolution, anyways? Watch this podcast and learn what you're up against:...

[walter biscardi] "Setting the Ceiling IRE to 109 means Color will clip anything at 109 or above. If you want Broadcast Safe you set to 100 or, as we do in our shop here, 99. " Hi Walter, I'm trying to save as much Highlights as possible because this is due to be printed in 35mm (no 16 as I wrote). No problem to keep the Luma, but, as Joseph wrrote, I must be careful with strange colors that could be generated when transfered...

Well, to play devil's advocate here...let's assume that the said music will NOT be in the final. What you all mention is very very bad if the music that is downloaded is used in the final. Unless you license that music from BMI or ASCAP and pay the hundreds to thousands of dollars for it. In that case, YES, you bill them for that. But what I tend to do with this music is use it as TEMP music. Something that will be replaced later by...

Nasty . . . .
When you say: " I tried remapping them and re-masking them but it takes way too much work and doesn't look good enough. " Just how are you doing this?
3 dead pixies is not good - I Agree. When I had this, thankfully it was only 1, and then off to the Canon E.R. When you do the remapping do you use 2 tracks OR do you use 4 tracks, one for each pixel PLUS 1 for the ...

ALSO to make matters worse, my video elements get mis-arranged during the render process. For example I have a picture in picture clip (PNP). The video playing in the PNP section is zoomed in so you only see a section of the full clip in the rendered version, were as in the timeline it plays fine. Graphical elements are shifted or are larger than they should be.
Crazy stuff.

What's freezing up? The camera or your laptop?
What are you using as a scratch disk and how is it connected to your machine? Certainly having a second firewire bus or eSata bus to connect an external drive with would likely smooth things out.

I think the 5D & 7D are complete game changers, you have to use these cameras to see the amazing quality. However there are some circumstances when they don't work like shooting when other camera flashes are happening & the old dreaded rolling shutter wobble.
Take a look at this opener I edited for the Snooker. All shot on a Canon5DmkII by Colin Nuttall, amazing depth of field. No colour ...

Before you go dump your hard earned money into SxS cards you have another alternative. Besides the ability to save money on media you could also create near uncompressed quality files.
I'm talking about investing into the Convergent Design's Nano Flash and using affordable compact flash memory cards in place of those pricey SxS cards. I just purchased 64 gig CF cards for under $300 each. now ...

As a note -- Someone pointed out that the beta stage for the Scarlet and the Epic will be quite similar since they use many of the same components (part of their modular setup) so it may be that the beta stage won't be as long as I earlier anticipated. This is still all speculation until they actually announce what they are doing.

Hi Brett.
[Bret Williams] "16:9 29.97 480p footage. "
Is this 30p or 24P with pulldown?
[Bret Williams] "Before reading your thread I tried mixing the two in a 24p timeline (with hopes of making an actual 24p DVD) but the 29.97 stuff looked horrible"
Yeah, FCP doesn't do a real nice job of this kind of workflow. Adjusting the footage outside of FCP and bringing it ...

First thing I am going to tell you to do is offload your P2 cards the "safe" way.
Believe it or not, using a laptop is the most efficient and safest way to offload your cards. Having a program like Shotput Pro will make the job even easier. You even have the option to offloading your cards to as many as three hard Drives simultaneously.
When using an HD to offload your cards directly...

You want to make a clean install of both the OS and Studio 3 if you want an absolutely clean and good running system. So yes, in my book, it's absolutely necessary to install Studio the correct way from the start.
I install a new hard drive in my Mac Pro and simply do the complete install to that.

Regarding the length of RAM previews, see this page, including the comment at the bottom: RAM and disk caches .
This will be greatly improved with the 64-bit version of After Effects, which we recently announced .
More RAM beyond what you have does help when you're using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing , but it won't help you to get longer RAM previews. BTW, ...

It, of course, depends on the minutes produced. I've not heard of anyone charging by the finished minute in 20 years. IMO, you should charge by the hour or by the day. Based on your pre pro meetings, you should know how much time you will ut into it so you could quote a flat price for the finished video up front. I believe that's all the client is wanting in this case... and in most cases for ...
