Strange Compression Within FCP
Published (2009-11-19 23:50:00)
Well then, it isn't an FCP issue, it is an issue with the camera and/or the tape. Can you try to recapture the footage and see if it happens again? To rule out a slightly corrupt QT file. If it STILL does that, then it is an issue with the footage from that camera. Shane GETTING ORGANIZED WITH FINAL CUT PRO DVD ...don't miss it. Read my blog, Little Frog in High Def

Using a noise reduction plug-in might be the easiest and cleanest way to deal with broadband noise like you have. There is iZotope RX , BIAS Sound Soap 2 , and Sony's own Noise Reduction which ships with Sound Forge. iZotope RX is the best but it's also the most expensive. BIAS Sound Soap 2 is the least expensive, pretty darn good with broadband noise, and is very simple to use. You might want to try the free trial of that first....

FCP project loading time
Published (2009-11-19 16:56:00)
It's usually not how much media a project file contains that causes a slow load most of the time. It's how many sequences you have open, and how many edits are in those sequences. FCP uses something like 2.7gigs of RAM is all... so when you open a project with open sequences, it loads a lot of information about those sequences into RAM. If you fill it up, then the system starts disk caching. Once you open a project file, only work...

FCP is quicktime based so you will need both a qt wrapper and an edit friendly codec. A proprietary codec and wrapper will need to be converted but I don't know what Velocity files actual are so there may be a way to rewrap. It is highly unlikely that they can work native in FCP.
As for reading sequence/ project files XML translation is likely if the Velocity can export in a compatible ...

You mentioned NOTHING about what program you will be editing in? Different programs will have different options of how to best do this.
What will you be editing with?
There are no "technical solutions" to your "artistic problems".

There is nothing wrong with that size. DV is 13GB/hour. So that is spot on.

Are you saying you disabled hardware acceleration and now it's very slow? That's exactly what I would expect.
Or are you saying that when you use 3.0.4 you must disable hardware acceleration in order for it to work?
I don't think there should be a difference between 3.0 and 3.0.4 in terms of hardware acceleration. If hardware acceleration works on 3.0 it should work fine on 3.0.4 too. ...

What kind of file are you editing and starting with? DV? HDV? uncompressed HD or what?
Any DV camera will allow you to record DV to BTW, and you have this ability right now if you have one.

Yes it shoots progressive. You really want to convert the files to ProRes or similar first though as you will have to do a lot of rendering otherwise.

Joel, I agree with your analysis that the project files are tradecraft, not workproduct, and you don't give them away. However, you *could* give them over and charge them apropriately for it, if you felt like it.
I don't see much downside since they've obviously decided to go with someone other than yourself, so if you get them mad, what's the harm? It may even work out better for you to ...
