Top Gear electric car tested
Published (2009-11-22 21:58:00)
Top Gear has built a home-made electric car, a ‘rival’ to the Chevy Volt, and we’ve tested it. If you watched this week's Top Gear TV show you'll know all about the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust, a car built by Messrs Clarkson, May and Hammond. If not, here's a brief review: the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust is a road legal car/shed that started life as a TVR Chimaera and underwent quite a few modifications to become a...

fuzzybear: If you put all the data aside and forget about people feeling a need to win an argument and tribalising it with one camp against another and if you take out the political elements and who's manipulating what in order to cream off your hard-earned, there really are some issues human beings really need to get a handle on. Logically it can't be a good thing that the world is vastly over populated if everyone on it...

An Idiot.

It often surprises me how some cars are 'growers'. When the 5 series BMW came out i thought it was pretty hideous but now i really like it. The current Ford Focus was awful i thought, but now it's quite nice. Familiarity maybe brings you round. At the same time some cars date really quickly. Often i find Japanese cars date very quickly, but even the Jag XK from a few years ago looks really dated. Maybe since the new one came...

Exciting Estate?

KPB: Teg - not sure you'd go for a slush box but I thought this was a very interesting motor for the money. I had kicked around the idea of a 406 V6 but after several 306's, I just couldn't live with the build quality! I stumbled across a W8 at a dealer last night. It is a brilliant curio, which despite the slush box fascinates me somewhat. What I didn't say in my original spec is that I need to use it...

DavidMR: given that i'm not in publishing, i guess i must be the last bastion of appledom in one of the many other professions that use macs... I have a Mac Mini and thus I could quite truthfully proclaim that "my profession uses Macs", because here I am using one. However, I should explain that it's simply so that I can test my company's products work with the nasty thing. Care to name any industry standard...

When the 5 series BMW came out i thought it was pretty hideous but now i really like it. agree with that, evo. don't like bimmers as rule, but the current 5 has grown on me too. and, unlike previous bimmers, i don't think it'll date quickly (the curse of most german cars), as it's sufficiently different from it's very dull looking predecessors. i...

Not much i can add to the climate debate which has hundreds of comments of the telegraph blog. Autocar posts it's formula one stories in this section even though there is a motorsport section, so this section by example is a free for all. As for air etc. being a finite resource, everything is finite unless its infinite surely? There is not an infinite amount of air, and that air will cease to exist in its current from...

It's interesting comparing this to the family hatch group test, and also Chevvy write-up. For the money, this appears to pffer a better proposition than either Koreans or the establsihed European brands in a band below. It looks like Suzuki have been lying low and learning from the mistakes of it's competitors; even if the whole package is a bit derrivative. For instance, the front is very ...

It looks like an inflated E46 (facelift version). Admitedly, the current 5-series is an incredibly tough act to follow, as it hardly dated at all since its launch.

- i think the olympic decision was very short sighted, what better way to promote the UK and legacy (a cornerstone of the olympics). -here is an EU/Japanese company with world class manufacturing and design facilities in the UK, with world leading tech. and they want to push the infrastructure on a project that they and EDF would not have let fail; the UK Nissan car plant makes them the largest...

And this, THIS is the basis for the new 5-series. BMW is in free fall. Although they are trying as best they can, they simply cannot copy nor compete with VW/Audi/Porsche and it isn't even close. Just like with so many other car co's its just a matter of short years before BMW is taken up by toyota, Honda, VW, MB or Nissan/Renault. J

Autocar: "It will be difficult for him to take on Lewis Hamilton," Oh yeah. Even if it was Hamilton joining Brawn to partner Button he'd have difficulty. Can't believe that Button gave up on the Brawn team so easily after they gave him something that he's never had before - a championship winning car.

While Luca di Montezemolo is still pushing for a third car at Ferrari, Schumacher himself has been typically cryptic in a way that suggests that the speculation is correct. He'll be 41, but with the fitness of the average 25-year-old racer, and should the neck injury have properly recovered, he must return. If he does, what a year it will be.

Anything you can do I can do better!!!??? After the Toyota Martin we get the Rolls Mini. Let's hope it will be better than the Princess 4 Litre R which had such a shaky life with so many mods needed to the RR engine. I suppose if it's just RR trim things should be better. Buyers will love paying a vast premium, no doubt.

Can it match British build standards? Is that a joke? Ladas are better built than the average British car irrespective of make or year if you take into consideration that they use hopeless materials. MG, TVR, Rover, Range Rover the original mini (the new one doesn’t count as it’s controlled by Germans) and Rolls Royce (especially poor electrical equipment in the British built ones before BMW) ...
