I think the best solution is something custom too but the only other thing I can think of is a manfrotto super clamp with a miniboom (I can't find exactly what I had in mind. The superclamp pretty much hooks into anything - armrest on a wheelchair for instance. Here is a kit that should work: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/325440-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto...

The other option is to go with Aperture-priority, then stack ND filters until your shutter speed is where you want it. If a bright sky is involved, a Graduated ND filter may help to even the exposure out across the frame. If you have something like the Singh-Ray Vari-ND (variable 3-8 stops), the task is a little simpler. More expensive, but simpler. If you feel the investment in an ND filter is a waste because you don't only take...

Most folks find the narrow view and the short telephoto length of the 50mm a bit constricting. It's inexpensive and a no brainer to have it in the bag. In the "olde" days when you purchased a 35mm film camera it came with something around 50mm as the "kit" lens. With a 35mm (and full frame cameras) the 50mm lens gives the perspective (though not the expansive view) of pretty much what the eyes see. The...

I'd FX compatible prime, lovely prime. 50mm 1.8D 35mm 2.8D 105mm 2.8D 85mm (whatever, would like an FX version of this). Light is always good also as mentioned, possibly better than glass for IQ iif used a lot.

Rule of thumb: don't upgrade equipment unless you can express exactly how it will let you take better images; "it's better overall" is not a reason :-) Likewise, the specs aren't a reason, for example how much difference is there in lighting power at 10m between an SB800 at 105mm and an SB900 at 200? From what I've heard, not a lot. The biggest improvements are in the controls - and this is an issue if...

one was shot at iso 800, the closer you can stay to 200 the better. Gimp is free and from what i hear is pretty decent software

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your meter going dim. Are you saying that the viewfinder lights went dim? If you put in a new battery and it fixed it then that's probably it but to be honest, I've never had my battery get close to running out during a shoot so I can't tell.

I find that LiveView is more appropriate at times, and it is always there. Overall, I use whichever one will help me bend over, crouch or crane my neck less. Getting old.
The right-angle viewer will keep your chin off the ground. Very good for static macro work, but you can get a different eyepiece for that. Also useful for sky-gazing, as you don't have to strain your neck getting ...

For inexpensive photo editing, I recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements.
On the 5x7 print, you mention distortion and grain. For distortion, keep in mind that your camera shoots at an aspect ratio of 2:3. So 2" x 3", or 4" x 6", 8" x 12", or 20" x 30", for example works without cropping it. However, to do a 5" x 7", you will need to crop it to that. Most photo lab software allows ...

Some tripod manufactures make lateral arms for just this sort of thing -- where the tripod legs get in the way of the camera placement. Gitzo (the maker of my tripod) makes a few lateral arm options, for example. This might be a great solution for your needs.
Also, some tripods spread wider than others. Trying some out might lead you to a model that will be wide enough at ...

Focal length-wise, use your zoom to determine which field of view would work best for you; aperture is irrelevant at this point. Once you determine that, your choices are narrowed.
Regarding close-up/macro work, if you are not serious about the subject, consider a close-up filter (Canon 250D or 500D, Tiffen +1/+2/+4, etc.), or a close-up adapter like the Raynox. If you find that ...

i think the 18-105 lens is a good all round type of lens. i dont own it, but there are reservations regarding its plastic mount.
the 50mm would be a great lens for someone starting in photography, and from what i have read of people that own it, its highly recommended, due to its image quality and price!

The regular max sync is actually 1/200. The only thing you can really do is use higher power lights. When I use my alien bees I can kill most of the ambient light unless the sun is shining directly at the window. You can keep the subject further away from the background too if possible. I haven't tried it but if you go with autofp and use 2 or 3 lights, it may have enough power...

@PVA_1964 Nice video! But it doesn't really show changing focus during the video as the subject moves around. It's not too hard to manual focus if both the subject and you are stationary. I have seen great videos on youtube where the capture was done while walking around and shifting focus in and out on various subjects. That's what I have trouble with.
How's the AF on D300s ...

If you're going to get the sigma 18-50mm 2.8 (the hsm/macro version I hope) I wouldn't get the kit lens. If you do get the kit lens, then the 50mm 1.8 would be a good complement but I think you'd be very limited with just the 50 1.8 since it's more of a portrait focal length and not wide enough.
If it were me, I'd get the sigma and the body for now and then see what you need. ...
