If you're shooting manual and portraits, you can use one of the older Nikon lenses. I got a 50mm 1.4 for $65 on eBay. It doesn't autofocus or meter, but I don't need it to.

I guess so. I heard a guy in my local camera shop advise a customer to buy 2GB rather 4GB to avoid to temptation to let loads and loads of shots build up on the camera between transfers to a computer. Sounds like a good plan to me, along with formatting pretty regularly.

cngodles... That is correct. In other words the f/1.4 let's in 1.6 times the amount of light (or you need 1/1.6 of a given shutter speed for the same exposure, not quite half). The f/1.4 you get four (4!) times the light of an f/2.8 lens (or 1/4 of the shutter speed)!!! And compared to a "consumer grade" zoom wide open at say f/4 you get 8 times the amount of light ! ! !

I get to borrow a 1.8 50mm for my D70. It's excellent, but I still find situations where I want it to be faster. If things go OK, Ill be getting one (1.4) for Christmas.

I started this thread back in August and I've reread the responses and shared some with my camera club. I'm getting a D300s for Christmas and plan to keep my D70s as a backup. I figure that I may continue to use the D70s for my Nikkor 105mm F2.8 micro since I seldom crop those photos. The D300s will have my 70-200mm F2.8 (and maybe the 1.4 teleconverter) and stay on the tripod to capture wildlife. While the D90 fit better in my...

Kept my trusty D70 as a backup and moved to the D300 when it first came out. Love the 300 ... especially the low noise at the higher ISO.

Oh dear, I think I must be getting old! The D70s was the first DSLR I used and loved using it but got a good deal on a D100 and love it!! Backward step probably but solid construction and images that are great for me. Use both as required.

I am still using a D70 original, because I shoot off a tripod or that I handhold it in bright light. I photog cityscapes and landscapes so I need very basic features. I don't shoot events, or sports, or documentary or portraiture. I don't need the best AF, I don't shoot high ISO, mostly base ISO, I use singular drive than continous shooting. I probably have spent more money on tripods than on the camera or that it even rivals...

I might be wrong, but on my D70 this message is not an error, but it only tells me that I can take r04 (remaining 4 shots) before I fill the buffer and have to wait for the buffer to flush to CompactFlash.
If your 'error message' takes place to number of shots remaining to fill the card (ie if you turn off the camera, the remaining number of shots so fill the carsd still shows on ...

Why is that? If you mean the AF, it´s not a problem, I shoot in manual.

i bumped up to the d300, but keep my d70s around as an emergency spare/time lapse camera.
reason for upgrade: greatly improved iso and autofocus performance.

If by cheap you mean a fair price, then the Tokina 12-24mm is not just good, but very, very good.

A good choice from what I've read about it's high ISO (but not highest ISO) capabilities. Also, the D-300 is of similar quality. From what I recall the D90 will give decent ISO performance to ISO-3200 or about 2 stops above the D70s (assuming you draw the line at ISO-800 on the D70s). Going full-frame you can get better high ISO from the D700 or D3 -but DX lenses are much less useful. ...

I get this too, guess the D70 is getting old, lots have happen in the noise section on newer cameras. The only thing you can do is expose to the right! Get as good an exposure as you can. Besides that you can of course try noise reduction in post, but there is limits for how much it can cope with without compromising quality.
Don't know your level of knowlege, but this article is ...

Like basegrinder says, they'll call you the next day to "confirm" the order. They they say, "you know, you haven't ordered a battery, I'm going to add OUR fancy battery that costs double what the normal battery costs. And hey you need a UV protector, case, cable, CD-ROM, and lenses". ...
