14-24-50 is a good FOV spread. (35 would be too close to the 50 and too far from the 14.) 20-35-50 would make sense, as well.

Yeah, and after you buy for a few dollars more you will never even know it is gone. I agree with ND, anything under 3K for this camera is a bargain. It is awesome

Don't listen to the naysayers! There's a lot to see by getting out into the world. Carry your camera in a crappy-looking, tattered, weather-beaten knapsack and it should be okay. If your bag looks poor, people will assume there is nothing in it that they would want to steal. Be mindful of it wherever you go, and hide it well if you have to leave it somewhere -- it will be okay. Go light on the lenses, though. Maybe a 20 and a 35-70....

vida... the 135mm will be a better bet for weddings... you can use it for tight portraits... and a LOT of great photographers I know use it in exchange for the 70-200 zoom for ceremony shots... it would help keep your bag a little lighter...

Given you have a 14 and a 50, of your two options I would pick the 24mm 2.8. That said, if you left the choice wide open, I would probably look for a 20mm 2.8

First of all, should you really open a new thread for this kind of crap? Second, why didn't you say it's about the 70-200 lens? Third, if you really don't care, don't post it. And fourth: why on earth are you discussing this in the D700 group? There are lots of nice groups you can also troll: There's the Nikkor group, the 70-200 group etc etc.

I find it interesting that people do unload the 85mm on a somewhat regular basis. I've been using the 85 1.8 and I love it, but it has limits. Not long enough--too long. So I'm looking at zooms to get to the next level of what I'm doing. Kind of a trend I'm seeing as well.

fEE is the message you should see if the lens is not locked at maximum aperture. So I think you can rule out the aperture lock issue.
The message you get means "no lens attached or non-CPU lens attached without specifying maximum aperture." Since the 28-90 is a cpu lens, and since the 70-200 also gets the same error message, it seems like that narrows the issue down to "no lens ...

Nikon 180 2. 8 AF? Not that light or small but an outstanding lens. Definitely smaller and lighter than the 70-200 2.8.

So you have a sense of urgancy to fill it out. Thus, making the lens non-returnable.
At least that's the philosophy of Cameta Camera. Beware of Cameta Camera! You've been warned.

I man-handled one at the local shop the other day. It's really well built, no question about it. Much nicer than the other models, but that's expected for a camera of the D700 level.

I might use them if I was shooting jpg and felt the need for either of them
but mostly just too lazy to experiment, and pretty much always shoot RAW

Depends on what is really a deal as I see it. Ritz is more than B&H, but you can pay it off with no interest over 12 months. Factor the declining value of the dollar, and prices will adjust accordingly.

400mm shouldn't be a problem for portraits if
a) you have LOTS of room to work in, and
b) You don't mind shouting at your subject
;)
