it is probably welded on pollen etc, specially as you were shooting in the great outdoors. My advice is start now and learn to clean your own sensor. It is now a major part of serious digital photography. I tortured an tormented myself on this, so my advice is get over it. Buy an Artic butterfly, and a loup 7x and swabs and cleaning fluid. Give your self loads of time to do it. Eventually you will do a better job yourself than Nikon.

Any pressure would be on the (metal) outside of the lens and unless some decides to use it as a stool there's no problem with that. I store my gear at all odd angles & places -- that never did any harm to them. some lenses really are tempting to be used as a stool when you rest them on their lens hood

If you're cropping that much, you might consider a D3x (or D300) to retain more detail in the cropped result. You're definitely giving up MP / detail by shooting D3/D3s/D700 in DX mode. (How's the 1.2 crop?)

While it is slow, and the interface is fairly stupid in some ways, and it leaks memory, and the updates that matter cost the price of rebuying the program practically, CNX2 has it's charms. On a strong computer (PC) with sufficient RAM and a quick multi-core processor, with the program setup properly, and the OS tweaked, workflow on single images can proceed at a rational pace. Some mods are made so easily in CNX2 that you can finish...

As long as there's solid detail rendered, removing chroma from that image takes what, like 30s of your time - that image rocks for detail and subject distance. D3s' high iso is mucho bada**. OP for pitch black we fire flash images then manually compensate focus distance - or easier, pack a good flashlight.

Supply seems to be plentiful as demand is not as great as when the D3 was announced.

Keep the tower it has to be the colosseo, but you have to throw in the parthenon and a couple of restaurants full of Roman people to make sure of a good night

The high ISO can help you in a couple of ways. You can shoot handheld, with smaller apertures than before. AF still works under moonlight. You can capture fast movements, sharper, more DOF thanks to high ISO
There are AF assist lights. The SU-800 or use a strong flashlight / torch.
Or set your lens to near infinity ( hyperfocal distance) and stop down.
And IMHO the ISO1000000 is...

I'm an amature who bought himself a D3 2 years ago. Never looked back, absolutely love it and I use it all the time. Only thing is when you're spending that kind of money you need to be very sure you will use it all the time.

is there a less time consuming method than opening in in "NC" saving and then reopening in photoshop
Yes: open in Nikon View NX, save and reopen in PS. View NX does not suffer from the speed issues that Capture does, and if you just want to open the NEF and save it as a TIFF to preserve the picture control then using View NX is much faster (and it's free)....

This one is a bit overcrowded -- especially if you want to swap lenses quickly but it shows the Slingshot 300 's capacity The important factors to me were the height fits the D3, the width fits D3 + 70-200VR, I like that quick access from the side.
Not shown in this picture is the extra compartment at the top (hidden under the flap) where I put flash, flashlights etc.

The 80-400 is know for its lack of AF speed even in broad daylight. f/5.6 isn't helping either in poor light -- the D3s won't help improving that.

Shoot using MANUAL WB, preferably set to DAYLIGHT and adjust in post should you feel the need. Skip the AUTO WB altogether if you're going to be shooting under the same lighting conditions. Of course, you can always shoot a WB calibration frame on sight and use that in manual. Consistency is more important than WB accuracy for this, in my opinion.
