Flickr: Discussing When to crop?...
Published (2009-12-20 19:17:00)
photopath I don't straighten or crop at all in CNX2 when a NEF needs correction for keystoning. I do a perspective crop in PS (finished NEF exported to PS as TIFF) or use a PS plug-in and then crop using PS. Sorry I wasn't clear. My point was that I wish to preserve as much of the image information as possible prior to keystone correction and cropping. I can only do that by not straightening or cropping in CNX.

If you're going to export to another program, such as one of Adobe's, you might not want to crop in CNX. For instance, I use the PTLens add-in for PSE (also available as a separate program) to correct distortion from my Sigma 10-20mm zoom. I crop after using it because I don't know the boundaries of the picture until then. Roger

Was what you described above working on 1.61? It is not working with 1.61 for me. So, I will try 1.62. So close...... I was thinking content indexing may include the IPTC info etc., so I included it just in case.

Win 7-64, I've had 2.2.4 quit running once but I was using CEP too so cannot directly identify NX as the culprit. I have noticed NR is very fast while cropping (after doing some edits) can be very CPU and memory intensive. I've learned I can anticipate problems when the editing image and thumbnail disappear (go black) - this has also happened once but things seems to right themselves to continue.

Flickr: Discussing When to crop?...

I try to crop last due to the problem with coordinates changing on local adjustments. Its not that hard for me to visualize the cropped image while adjusting the whole.

Working well for me, at least no worse than before and seems more stable. One new quirk, when I process a batch of images from the browser pane the batch completed message box comes up twice at the end of the batch. Not a show stopper and they do seem to be modal and on top rather than hiding behind other windows in prior revisions.

Hello everyone! Happy Holidays to all I apologize for the very basic nature of this question but i always enjoy your input and assistance :-) I currently use CNX2.2 only and am very happy with the results. However, i understand that Photoshop does have some tools and items that can add to post processing. My question to you is.......do you normally use just CNX when you pp or do you use CNX+Photoshop in order to obtain a larger scope of pp...

@starfish: I agree that High-pass sharpening has a lot of advantages and works really well. However regarding the question of the OP, it is not restricted to a subset of the tonal range - which in the case of HP would also not make too much sense since it anyways predominantly sharpens the edges.

if you have something in the picture that you know to be grey or white, try the white and grey colour controls on these objects - you can always undo the update
I normally try to make sure that there is a white reference subject in the picture that can later be cropped out if necessary

There may be better ways, and if there are I'd love to hear about them, but one way of doing this might be through the use of a few "+" (plus) selection control points with a large radius, placed in the mid-tones. If that selects too much, you can place a few "-" (minus) selection control points in bright and dark areas as needed.

I find the best point in the workflow to crop is near the end
Our last 3 steps are crop, Possibly Resize [for example to attain 8X10
at 300DPI] and Sharpening
one very good reason for this suppose you or somebody else wants a copy at different dimensions 4X6, 5X7 ??
then you uncheck the last 3 steps and redo them for the new dimensions
as a NEF you can save the 1 file ...

I use a WhiBal card all the time. It's easy to use and it works perfectly. I usually set a custom WB on the camera and then I shoot a test shot of the card, just so that I can verify that it's neutral. It's usually spot on.

That is called Watermarking.
NX2 does not support watermarking. There are some tricks to do watermarking, and I recently hard of a freeware utility add-on for NX2 to allow watermarking, but they have several draw-backs.
You could either load your finished photograph into something like Photoshop, Gimp, or another photo editing program to add the watermark, or you can search ...

Hello Rick,
Taking your questions in order:
1. After you download and install the software it behaves as though it were an original part of CNX. You can apply as many filters as you like in one editing session (not possible, BTW, when using CEP with some Adobe software).
On this page , under Lessons, is a 4-minute video about using multiple filters in CNX. This shows you...

your friend "gave" you a key? Where did he get it from? is it legit? and if he gave it to you how many other people got a copy in this illegal manner? CNX2 will allow 3 installations active on as many machines before it will stop use.

I am looking forward to finding the functionality of Viveza 2 in CNX3 and would be delighted to find it in an update to CNX2, however unlikely. I hope my anticipation has some basis in reality. :-)
