Diane, when you say you make sure the client can go away with "no less than one large wall portrait," what exactly do you mean? Are you talking about an 11x14 or something bigger? A canvas or just a print?

There's only one reason your prices are low and that's because you haven't raised them. Did I read correct that you have package prices and will then discount them even further? If so, please stop! ;-) Packages aren't necessarily a bad thing, but they have to be priced right to be profitable for you and appealing to your clients. I like what Toya does where the purchase of a package then allows you a discount on a la carte...

I offered packages when I first started - but I found it too time consuming as the client couldn't decide which she wanted in what size etc etc so I found it far easier just to pick sizes. Also, when I see packages offered, they never offer the sizes/combinations I want.

I had made the decision Not to offer collections because it 'seemed' to me that collections didn't fit for most clients and I've heard so many stories of people wanting to switch things out/substitute. So I went strictly with a la carte pricing to allow people to buy what they really wanted. Fast forward a bit and I began to have people ask me if I had any collections to choose from. One gentleman asked me if I'd put...

Ok, I'm getting ready to place an order with Mpix-Pro for a set of 30 Christmas cards for a client. The image she chose is bright and colorful so I am thinking the cover stock w UV coating may look best (from the paper samples I have.) I like the look of the linen too, but I need to get this order in tonight. Has anyone ordered any cards through Mpix-Pro? I have ordered prints and standouts from them but no cards yet. I just want to make...

Seriously, screw the end of the year. Give them seven days and tell them that you need to keep ordering flowing to prevent back logging for other clients, tell them in order to have their photos by the holidays they need to order in seven days with payment. Be firm! This is your business. Most of the time people don't order because they know they will just get away with waiting... don't give them the options. $10 is way too cheap as...

well.. how much do you have to spend? limited means something different to everyone. if you like zooms you could always get the tamron 28-75 or if you like primes you could get the sigma 20mm 1.8

Good point. I also tend to be too critical of my work. You should be critical, that's how you grow as a photographer. But only seeing the negative and not the good will only discourage you.
Also I have to try and be more adventurous and try things I usually wouldn't think of. The crazy accident shots are often the ones I like best.
Many here show me that thinking ...

They are printed on both sides, and read just like any other book. Are you designing your own book, or using a template? Or just full page photo only spreads? I personally would not recommend having the book set up so that the reader has to turn the book.

Charles Waugh, a pretty well known photographer in my area is known for this look. You can see his style on his website here.

He explains a bit how he achieves this look. It sounds like he's using a tablet like a Wacom or such and program such as Corel Painter to do the 'painting'.

I second 'everything'!
If I think in reasonable terms:
another Lensbaby
a Wacom tablet
a terabyte hard drive
a vintage camera tattoo

I did my own family photos two years ago when my son was only a month old. Basically what I did was set up my tri-pod outside in various locations, then set my camera and ran to be in the picture. It was a bit hard to keep running, but they came out cute. good luck!

Wix.com is a good place for beginners to make decently attractive sites.
I made mine using it, and while I can't wait to upgrade to a bludomain site, I can't afford it right now. Mine does the trick & many clients say they love it!
Wix can be a bit slow (and eventually be sure to pay the extra to get rid of the banners), but it's free & flash, and good for learners!

Just be warned that Bing cashback is somewhat of a risk. I've used it for a couple of years and have saved a lot of money, but it can be a PITA. Right now I'm in the middle of arguing with them over cashback I earned on a washer/dryer I bought from Home Depot on Black Friday. They're claiming that since they were on sale, that's a "discount or coupon" and I'm not eligible. Ridiculous....

I recently received an order of cards from WHCC and love the cards but am disappointed in the envelopes as they are lightweight and cheap looking.

I never plan on people ordering more than 1 8x10, a few 4x6 or 5x7 and some wallets. I make sure that I get all the money I need in the session fee and charge a premium for images on CD.
I find that a lot of people in our digital age are not so much into prints as they are being able to share their family photos with friends and family on social networking sites or through their ...

I use moo.com. I get their standard cards, not the mini cards. I really like them -- they're really thick, and I like that I can put a variety of photos on the front. They're like a walking portfolio.

I think the carpet would be fine if you blurred it a bit and maybe added a touch of vignette. Oh, and I would also clone out the partial fingers on the rightmost boys left hand.

I would worry less about getting the kids to look at the camera and just let them do their thing (unless you're really pressed for time). Maybe try some non-traditional images like them jumping or whatever to get them a little more relaxed and less pressure on you if everyone's in a better mood.
Don't let it deter you, learn from these experiences and apply what you learned from ...
