Matt the Zoom head of course is used to spread light over a greater area at the wide end or concentrate it at the long end of course the autozoom feature will start you off about right if your flash is shoe mounted and pointing at the sub. Since bouncing off of the ceiling or a wall etc results in a longer flash to subject distance a longer zoom head position might be appropriate so auto zoom may not be the way to go. Try it first of course...

The SU-800 is a great tool. I think you can also use a flash tether (SC-28 or SC-29) to fire off camera if your body does not have commander mode. scotty-j - This will work with your SB-600 and if you get a SB-900 then tether it and use it as a master. I have a DB-600 and SB-900 with a D80 and using both off camera is great fun.

Next question: Is the auto zoom function of the flash really useful when bouncing, or is it only really used when pointing the flash directly at the subject? Thanks again, Matt

I have a hard time getting the subject to not look like a ghost. This is one of the only ones I've got that gives the effect that one would expect : But I had fun experimenting with deliberately overexposing with the repeating strobe and got some interesting results as well (and a headache):

Well, I did originally look at the manual, but just to make sure I took another peek and after some head scratching I figured out why I was confused. Unlike with autofocus where you turn the auto on, or auto off, on the zoom of the flash, you have to turn the manual mode on, or manual mode off. So when I thought I was setting the auto mode to on, I was actually setting the ...

I'm not sure if you can keep it on for longer. The purpose of the modelling light is so you can see how the light will effect your subject (shadows, etc). It gives you a brief preview of how your light is going to fall. You can flip your SB900 to manual mode and then you can use that same button (modelling flash) to use it as a trigger to activate your flash. You can then ...

If you mean wireless using the CLS/AWL mode then not for the D3000, you will need a D90 at least to use 'advanced wireless lighting' (AWL) in Nikon's CLS (creative lightign system). Unless that is you get a SC-28/29 cordsor use a cheap radio trigger like Gadget Infinity V4. Using radio triggers would be possible for you to place the flash anywhere but CLS/AWL is much easier to do...
