Well hopefully your doing: Image > Resize
What you might be missing is making sure the "Lock aspect ratio" option is checked in the Resize dialogue box. That way when you change the width OR the hight,
the other dimension ( width or hight ) automatically changes to maintain the same ratio.
If your doing something else, please say what steps you are doing....

creative commons picture from flickr will do, right?
just do an advanced search for the item you need and specify "Creative Commons" "items to modify" at the bottom of the page.

Do you have a faulty or
sticky space bar on your keyboard? This would give the behaviour you describe - if it's not this I'm stumped.

Sounds like the
file association has been changed and your computer is opening the file with internet explorer. At some point you may have accidentally told it to open a zip file with IE and it now tries to use that by default.
Try right clicking a zip file and hover over the "open with" option. Select "Windows Explorer". It's important to note that Windows Explorer is your file ...
