Scuba - I'm not sure that bbf has much influence here...? It's possible the AF got set there, but the OP is in MF mode.

I believe, as far as noise goes, the 1D2 is not a great performer. ISO 400 is fairly noisy especially shooting against a blue sky and in the shadows. I have a very good friend with a 1D3, and he can easily shoot at ISO 800 nearly noise free so I think there was a big push in that direction with the 1D3.

A worrisome thing is that the OP seems to be merely a teenager. I hope she got some firm guidance convincing her not to do this.

True enough. After all the 50 can do things the 35 can't. In my opinion, the 35 being sharper and better at focusing makes it superior. I guess it depends on what you need.

Depends what you mean by superior doesn't it? The 35 is sharper wide open, but the 50 is slightly faster and renders OOF areas sumptuously. One is noticeably wider than the other and the 50 has a recognised focusing flaw. Both superb lenses.

Yeah, I can see the batch convert coming in handy when you find that your last 30 shots have all been improperly exposed, like I've done. Well, usually I don't get more than 5 in before I catch it, but still. Or for white balance, or if you want to desaturate all of them... I can see the need for that. Thank you folks for taking the time to explain this stuff to a newbie. :) Much appreciated.

Shows it's not always true that you get what you pay for. I think this is the most expensive EF-S lens there is.

Also, many lenses will exhibit this behavior when they have trouble achieving focus, for several reasons. For instance: 1) not enough light 2) not enough contrast in the focus area (for instance, trying to focus on a blank wall) (You didn't mention your situation -- what you were trying to focus on -- so I brought these up just in case.)

The IS unit on my 17-55 started to act up after nearly 2 years of service. The view jumped around like crazy for a moment after activation, and after three to five shots the lens completely stopped working, no IS, no autofocus, no aperture changes. The camera showed 00 as the aperture value, almost like a lens software crash. I could only reset it by unmounting the lens. The repair on ...

Put it in AI Servo, then go to MF.
One shot won't let it take a shot without focus confirm. AI Servo will.

at f/8 I doubt you'd see much difference, especially if not pixel peeping. All of these lenses should be at close to their sharpest at f/5.6 - f/8 and I'm sure there are charts and tests "proving" that. Oddly, the nifty fifty shot looks under exposed by at least a stop. In a real world situation, all 3 of these lenses should provide different tools, yet at similar focal lengths and ...

I have both 400D and 5D2. I personally would always go for the FF 5D2. All the gadgets and functions etc can't make up for having a bigger sensor. To me the sensor is an important link in the chain just like good glass. All the other functions can usually be made up for by good technique.

Great question! I was recommended "Hot Shoe Diaries" however I have the Canon system. I realise that similar principles apply but it would be great to have a camera specific book using Off Camera Flash.

Dance recitals. No flash, fast movement and very dark.
Max the ISO, largest aperture, and hope that your hardly hand holdable shutter speed is fast enough to stop movement.
In your situation you could use hdr.

If you can actually check it in person and hand over the money for it there and then.
By all means do it. You have just got the bargain of the century.

you shot this at f/22... it is a flat object on a flat background... not much Depth is necessary...
the problem with small apertures like that (especially on high pixel density filters, like on your 7D) is at a certain point Diffraction starts to take affect and brings softness to an image.
You should have better results at F/8, or if you can get away with it, even f/5.6 (...

Did you have a filter on the front of the lens? Often these reflections are caused by light reflecting off of the sensor back to the filter, then back down to the sensor again.

That's another thing to consider, but I'm talking about studio portrait photography. Still, you might have a valid point for shooting photographing small children.
