Taherj, Does the AUC not offer accomodation? Or at least have lists of suitable student accommodation? There must be something set up for people who come from abroad to study here, contact the campus and ask them. It is illegal for Egyptians to share a flat with the opposite sex, so be careful if you get offers to share like this.

Let me make one suggestion. When posting a Book Club thread, just start the Title line with "Book Club:" and then the title of the book. That should make everything easy to find. And if we wanted to, we could always have multiple Book Club threads running at the same time - if someone can't get or read a particular title just now, they can always come back to it later. Cheers, Bev

There are some types of investment visa, but very large sums are involved - and they are for government approved investments, or investments in Thai companies, a complicated affair. Buying a reasonably expensive condo doesn't work any more. Work visas are also difficult to get - there are rules governing the kind of business that may be run, ownership (the maximum 49% rule again), minimum numbers of Thai employees for every non-Thai...

So who's going to set the threads for the books up? Should it be the person who suggests the book, or the first person who has something to say about it? Or someone else? I've seen a post for 'Mister Pip' already - maybe we should use this as the first post in the thread?

In my personal experience i've always found that most British people are curious to see and meet an American, in particularly places outside of London. I have never had a bad experience at all, they seem actually interested in knowing about me rather than pass judgement and make fun of me, I think that the people that are critical of the U.S. for whatever reasons will keep that to themselves ...

There's plenty of masons on the construction sites, as to whether they're free or not? Well that depends, I reckon working 6 days a week for AED1000 (if they're lucky) probably means they're as near to free as makes no difference....

Ok - I'll offer a suggestion: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. It has been made into a film, but I thought the book was much better. It's also very relevant to expats, being about an Indian family in the US.

You will not be able to bring a foreign maid into Egypt to live and work unless you are a diplomat or have very high connections, pretty reasonable when you think about it as there are plenty of Egyptian girls who are unemployed and looking for work.
Fillipinos are here and work independently they usually charge by the hour and the ones I know are not keen on living ...

We have friends who rented in Marinha Grande for one year and who next decided to buy in Alcobaca. They wasted a lot of time on a property deal there which later fell through. Holy Smokes! Yours is a complicated one!
Can't comment on Portugal at all. But it would be wise to have wills for each country.
A UK will covers your UK property. Perhaps a Portuguese will covers Portuguese property or perhaps it will be similar to a French will, which has some standing but will remain secondary to French Succession Law which takes precedence.
