Swiss German is actually a dialect of High German. Then there is Standard High German, which is what people mean when they say High German around here. Wikipedia explains all. "In German, Standard German is often called Hochdeutsch , a somewhat misleading term since it collides with the linguistic term High German . Hoch ("high") in the term for the standard language refers to "high" in a cultural...

Wasting time at work

I think that would depend on the job contract itself, I mean do you get paid to do some work, any work while you are in the office OR you get paid to do a certain kind of work as and when it arises? e.g. If you're an Advisor or a Troubleshooter and nothing goes wrong in a month, then basically you you are getting paid for doing nothing, but you're not violating any job terms... no?

I imagine there will be a few extra people turning up too than listed in the OP, I just pointed a couple of people who were at a loose end in the direction of this thread. Quiet night in for me tonight though. Enjoy the evening folks. Too right. The 2-4 ppl limit has gone right out of the window.

Quote: marko167 Hi,
I have recently noticed posters going up around Basel that show a portley chap holding a kebab knife with the logo "New in town Ali Kebap".
Can anyone shed some light as to what they are advertising.
Cheers,
M. Maybe some Kebab shop?

Quote: Principia Discordia We have a PS3 at work, I liked Resistance and Motorstorm, but Ridge Racer is pretty awful in my opinion. I'm a 360 guy myself, but I wanted to chime in say that I too think Oblivion is an awesome game, if you like the genre. It took me a bit to get into it, but now I play it all the time.

When my mother in law died, we had a ceremony at the crematorium. There was
no procession, and I got the feeling it was not a common thing here to have
one.

Hello, I am also a qualified paediatric nurse and moved to Switzerland from the UK 3 years ago. On arrival I was very keen to continue with my nursing career here and contacted many of the hospitals in the Zurich area. However, I found that it is impossible for me to work in the hospitals here without fluent German. I was told to learn german and then make enquiries again.
There are many ...

These sort of discussions will be come more prevalent in our societies as we simply cannot afford our cradle to grave health care systems anymore. But I doubt these people are looking for an honest discussion. I personally believe we should be addressing the money spent on extending someone's life from 86 to 87 first, then move onto other issues. Tough times ahead.

Well, in Holland 'black peter' can be 2 things:
- it is the helper of sinterklaas (here in CH: sammiklaus), in Holland he is the one that punisches the children that were behaving badly that year
- it is also a card game which can be played with regular or specialty cards.
Guessing from your description its the same here in Switzerland

In all seriousness, origami. Fun to do, and you end up with some skills that always put a smile on someone's face. Kids love to watch and receive whatever little folded sculpture you make. http://origami-addict.ch/wordpress/
