"what likely occurred is that because your disk was tuned up, the file system had a minor crash." How, exactly, does a file system "crash"? What is the difference between a "minor crash" and a major crash, in reference to a file system? And why would 'tuning up' a disk cause a file system to crash? --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est db wrote: > what likely...

That is your terminology. Most all follow the meaning that to partition is to create two or more from one. A single whole is not a part. An unpartitioned drive is the entire drive that has not been made into two or more parts. I agree with Peter, Doc, especially since you don't have a "complete history" of this laptop. Cut your losses. Check the documentation to make sure there is a hidden recovery partition. Be sure to copy all the data first, of course. If this model didn't come with a hidden recovery partition, you can have your friend contact Gateway for replacement of recovery media. Or get it from this site:...

Sounds like the only thing you have not tried
is a full recovery with the original OEM CD/recovery partition.
Which should work as your copy of XP Home SP2 worked.
Be aware that it will erase everything on the drive.

From previous post there doesn't seem to be a direct upgrade from XP to 7
without going to vista first so I think you'll have to do an install of 7
from a new full retail version.

They could be ophaned start up items. Perhaps an infection only partly

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware) from
