  If this happens with a particular document, that document could be protected (or restricted). Which version of Word are you using? I solved the problem by reading the file into Word 2000, modifying the style of the Heading 1 to link to the rest of the multilayer list, saving it, and reading it back into Work 2007. I can't believe there isn't a way to do it in Word 2007, but I spent 2 days trying to figure it out and solved it in 5 minutes in Word 2000. Is that ...

I am afraid that if the documents were not saved, there is nothing to recover. This is not something peculiar to Microsoft products. The problem is probably Citrix and some setting within that environment that's controlling these paths. The change will probably have to be made on the server rather than from the end-user side.
