Listening to the interviews in that NPR piece it's apparent that there's a lot of "stay outta my neighbourhood with your slow damn bicycle!" attitude. One has to wonder how many of the cyclists are the neighbours of these impatient people. Apparently it is legal to ride side by side in LA (which is kind of surprising), but it still isn't the smartest thing to do on a narrow road, and I wouldn't want to be...

In defense of my favorite mag the $700-$1500 range is where you start to get into good bikes. That said there is an abundance of quality and reliable bikes in that range. But truthfuly, who doesn't enjoy a little bike porn?

I like Shimano hubs as well.
I really like my WTB hubs on the Merlin. Swapped out the rear for a W.I. Eno last year, but still using the front. Going on 10 years. Rode the rear for 9 years. Both still spin great! Not sure about the latest version but I bet they're bomber. Unfortunately they're priced like jewelry!

I've built a couple of wheels and found the info on Sheldon's website most helpful!
I haven't built enough to have a favorite thread lube/lock, but I have heard a lot of people use the linseed trick. How is it for truing things up if you've bent things?

A 10 year old bike might get you $400 if it's in good shape, $300-ish if it needs major items serviced like the shock and fork. You can pickup 2007 FSR models for $875-$900
