The last thing you want is a "mechanics special" 250f. That 800 dollar bike will probly need 1500 dollars or more worth of PARTS. It's REALLY hard to ruin more than a thousand dollars worth of two stroke engine parts. If you want reliability find an older XR400. Spend a few extra bucks on it so you get a really nice clean one. Change the oil and clean the air filter frequently and it'll likely last years with no repairs....

Start with the basics, 1st disconect the kill switch. 2nd make sure all connections are clean and tight. 3rd check your grounds. 4th inspect your wireing harness for breaks or shorts. 5th check the magnets inside the flywheel, make sure they are strong. 5th check the stator plate timing, it has to be in the right position for it to work properly. 6th check and adjust your point gap, then ...

Water carries dirt. Dirt ruins engines. If you got muddy water in through the airbox or exhaust it really should get torn down and flushed out/cleaned well.

I have a similar problem on my 93 KDX 250 but mine's fulling sparks, can it be the float valve? I have dynojet kit and a twin air filter.
