Filter Size and brightness
Published (2009-11-21 11:06:00)
It is a different size, but it is Canons top of the line 50mm prime, and its lens to aperture ratio is much larger, which is why I thought there might be something to a bigger lens. My logic being if the lens is 40% bigger, it condenses more light though the same size aperture. The larger lens would be thicker and have some reduction due to that, but I just wondered how it all worked out in the end.

Don't forget, though, that the filter size is not necessarily a direct indication of the size of the front element.

Filter Size and brightness

Both lens have the same maximum aperture (f1.4) so their low light performance would be the same. I haven't checked, but the larger front element on the Sigma may help eliminate vignetting at larger apertures (f1.4 to f2. . Other than that, Sigma may be thinking about this lens as part of a system. 77mm is a very common filter size for pro/semi-pro lenses (those with big apertures like f2. . So if all your other lenses use 77mm filters,...

What a great challenge, BUT it appears we in Australia are in a heat wave, no rain.

The better lens in low light will be the one without a filter.
That said the filter size won't have a bearing on the low light performance. Only the aperture.

Interested in this. You'll have to get the date organised and let me know when it is, so that I can try to fit it in, as my schedule is a little free-form at the moment (by that I mean that I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing or where I'm supposed to be doing it).

We (Farnborough Rugby Club) have an away game at Eastleigh, so I will be making my way there via Marwell Zoo. KO will be 2pm, so I'd expect to be at Marwell from opening time through to about 12:30. (I have an annual pass, so a short day at the zoo doesn't worry me!).
If anyone would like to come along to either event, you will be most welcome - the Eastleigh games are normally close ...

It's usually either about ' branding' (ie marketing your name) or trying to 'protect' your image from theft (not guaranteed by any means, but at least the thief know who they are stealing from!).
I tend to just physically sign prints that I sell - it adds to the perceived value of the purchase.

Is the 5dmII work a grand more than the 7d?
Let me start out by saying that I've been investing in quality glass for a while, but I'm finding the limitations of the Canon 20d are getting to me.
I do alot of theater photography where the lighting conditions are challenging and constantly changing, further the actors never stand still.
I mainly shoot at 1200 and alot of the...

not a great effort but the sky has come out quite interesting. First time using the HDR process in Photoshop - so don't really know what I am doing with it.
There are a couple of bits that look quite good - the branches in the foreground, just right of centre look as I would expect an HDR to. I think the rest is not so good because most of it is moving in the strong wind that ...

I can't believe that such a silly little addition to my photo has, after much talking and laughter, spawned into this!!!
I am supporting this Flat Alfie project all the way! I can't wait to meet her when she travels to Australia! GO ALFIE!!
