Hi Ed, I think it has been asked here a lot of times and one of the best answers I have read is that "if you have to ask what you need then you don't need it at all".
If you always need a flash everytime you shoot then by all means save up for it, if you're into landscape and always need to use a tripod for a steadier shot then by all means buy one, etc. etc..

hi marvin. what 1kg cap frotto+head combo are you using? for your budget look into velbon-sherpa tripods (i believe dponline has them)
carbon fiber tripods are generally lighter but will set you back more.

At the risk of looking like a troll , I feel it would serve us better if we could have a unification of the Canon Rebel series camera users rather than individual threads for each model. Less clutter, the better ;)
Feel free to reintroduce your gear or not, share a photo, post questions, call for a shoot, call for a workshop etc.
