Switching from Avandia to Xelevia?
Published (2009-11-26 16:21:00)
I started using Avandia in 1999 and my heart is strong and healthy. I think there is only a very small percentage of diabetics who have any heart problems with that medication. My doctor did have me switch to Actos in 2007 but, after 6 weeks of higher blood sugar, I went to an endo for a second opinion. She told me to go back to Avandia since I had taken it for 8 years and had no problems. I would hate to give it up since it has helped me so...

lab tests: HbA1C and fructosamine
Published (2009-11-26 16:24:00)
Hello Richard, I agree with you that the test name is a bit confusing. It is also called Glycated Serum Protein (GSP) or Glycated Albumin. It is non-enzymatic reaction between fructose and ammonia so this is the source for its name. It is less popular than the HbA1C even though it is simpler and less costly than that for HbA1C. When it is usually used: 1. Evaluate new diabetic treatment 2. Evaluate new diet 3. During pregnancy when it is...

stress impact on scores
Published (2009-11-18 21:56:00)
Hi Richard. I'm taking Lantus before bed, gradually increasing the dosage. At a dosage of 19 for several days my scores were very good, averaging about 5 to 7. When my scores got up to 12 two days ago, I increased it to 22 units. Today scores are 10. I have been seeing a diabetic dietician who has eased me back on carbs (also a celiac and gluten free food has very high sugar and carb counts). As a bit of history, just prior to being...

Do I need to see a Endocronologist?
Published (2009-11-23 20:52:00)
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in September. I had a follow up appointment with my Doctor who is a DO and not an edocronologist. My A1c is 6.1 and all my blood work came out fantastic. I have lost about 30 lbs too. I take low doses of amyril and metphormin. My daily BG is always in the 80s & 90s, with an occasional 120 or so. Should I also go see an endocronologist or is it not necessary? If I don't need to, when does one...

Design for type 1 independence
Published (2009-11-17 13:50:00)
Hi, I'm a graduate student working on a design project for the Royal Society of Arts. The brief set is to design a service or product that would enhance the quality of life of people living with a long-term illness, promoting independence. With some personal (although limited) experience of the condition, my team decided to focus on type 1 diabetes. It would be great (and incredibly helpful for our research) to hear from anyone,...

Hello and welcome to Diabetes Forum! I had this same problem in the 1990's when I started using modern day insulins. The insulin caused me to gain 57 pounds over a three year interval. That caused me to become insulin resistant, a characteristic of Type 2 diabetes. I was a Type 1 with insulin resistance. That is called "double diabetes". I was given a Type 2 med (Avandia) and continued using my ...

I am 68 and have been diabetic for 62 years. I have trouble with arthritis and my eyesight when I am doing close-up work. It is very awkward for me to open a vial of strips and handle them properly and separate one from the group and insert it without touching the spots where the blood is to be placed. I tend to drop them frequently and sometimes spill the whole container of strips on the ...

Welcome to our forum! I am pleased to hear that you are exercising and trying to get help. You are off to a good start. If you can gradually lose weight and reduce your A1c to being less than 6.5 then that will be great. An A1c below 6.0 is considered nondiabetic. If you can ever reach that level you can greatly reduce the chances of having diabetes complications with your eyes, kidneys and ...

Thanks Iris! I have had the fructosamine test done only twice during my 64 years of diabetes. I wonder why it is not used more often. In your experience do doctors use this test frequently? It is a peculiar name for a 2-3 week BG average since fructose refers to the carb content in fruit. That has always been a puzzle to me.

Forgot to add the level of medication, as I guess its very relevant with interaction problems.
Metformin 1000mg 3 times a day with meals, glucor 100mg 3 times a day with meals, xelvia 100mg once a day with breakfast and alluplurinol 200mg once a day.
I test with a glucotrend, and the doctor gets me to take a long term blood gas blood analysis every 3 months so I cant just lie

Hello Kelly, welcome to our community! You sound so much more like a Type 1 than a Type 2. I am not a doctor though! Is your doctor an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist)? I have read of many people who were misdiagnosed. Going to an endocrinologist for a second opinion would be my next move. I have read about a few people being diagnosed as Type 2 when they were not overweight. Certain ...
