Oh, I agree, Subby . I was primarily reporting that "Carb Rule" didn't seem to be common parlance for anything that resembled what had been posted. Grunch's suggestion sounds right.

To refrigerate or not???
Published (2009-11-21 08:31:00)
The pharmacist may not have been clear as to your exact question, or is just plain wrong. Refrigerate while being stored, then when using a pen or vial, have out of the fridge in normal temperatures for up to a month. Advice is usually to discard the rest of an unused pen/vial, at that point. But don't go by what I say: check out the notes that came with each insulin or pen package.

I'm really open about my diabetes. How can you not be when you're on MDI? I left the Big Business world a long time ago in favor of my own bookkeeping practice, so I don't really have the workplace issues that others might. My clients were fantastic right after I was diagnosed - I had many shoulders to cry on when the frustration and confusion of those first few weeks got the better of me. Now the finger sticks and shots are old...

Meters affected by temperature?
Published (2009-11-20 13:41:00)
I pretty sure most meters won't work at much below 50 F. When I'm out in the cold weather I have to keep mine inside my coat or sleeping bag. My fingers don't like to bleed when they're cold either. Gotta warm them up and/or shake them down.

Cheese making can be very complex and depend on things like temperature, humidity and mold. Some of the worlds best cheeses are aged in caves because they have just the right balance of temperature and humidity. The right mold brings flavor, like that in blue cheese, but the wrong mold can do harm. There are many websites for beginning cheese making like this one: Cheese Making for Beginners...

Technically it is the HbA1c but practically the meter is a better guide.
Your earlier HbA1c results were skewed because although you had good
control you were still carrying around baggage from when you were getting
there. That's why I think soon after diagnosis the meter gives a more
current indication.

Apparently some of us do, because mine heal so fast I can't even find which finger I used for just the immediately previous test. I don't get bruises or tenderness, I don't get red or black spots on my fingers . . . none of that . . . and I can't find the holes either ('course I can't see very well! ) I wish all of you could have these finger pricks as easy as I have . . . Ugh I hate waking up to a high reading! I shoot for under 100 fasting if it is over that then I have a very hard time during the day keeping it down. I don't eat after 700 even before that if I feel I have to I will go with a tablespoon of peanut butter. But I find it best if I avoid food at night. I do however have a glass of wine. before bed.

Wow, That is a strong statement to make. But you are entitled to it. Diabetes is usually a disease that skips a generation. It did with me. Like you, I've been diabetic since the age of 11. My grand parents had diabetes and they had 8 kids of which none of them have it. Out of those 8 kids came 21 grand kids and I'm the only one that has diabetes. Out of us 21 grand kids, we have a total ...

There's very little YOU can do ... SHE has to do it! And, she has to want to do it first.
Putting off seeing the endo is just denial. She has to get over that & do what has to be done.
Continue to encourage her as much as you can. If you already live together, you already have a commitment. Taking the relationship to the next level may require her to step up.

I don't think it's fair to blame anyone for having diabetes, as that's not
a good attitude to have to begin with, and I'm pretty sure people can look
at me and assume I didn't get it from being overweight, since I am skinny
as ****!

I go for the belly every time. You should be OK as long as you leave a half inch distance between shots. I was told by my nurse that the belly gives the fastest reaction to your insullin. Because of the size of my gut I can handle all the shots in the world You might ask the doc to give you a prescription for the lantus solo star. Looks like a pen that is loaded with insulin and has a dial for ...

Personally, I think pumping saline for days is the silliest introduction to pumping imaginable. As you say you get all the negatives without basic feedback of the advantages. That's not a comment on you, but on the medical world.
That said, if you have such a gut reaction against the pump and all this negative material is surfacing, I admit I wonder if it is right for you. Maybe not. Nothing ...

I certainly don't have all the answers since I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic, but the 1st thing that came to my attn. is that you mentioned him rolling around on the floor in the middle of the night having "spasms"... I'm almost certain these episodes you speak of are seizures. You really should encourage him to tell his doctor about this ASAP. As for constantly getting critically low(know as ...
