Shure SM81 for Interview Setting
Published (2009-12-09 17:11:00)
If the room is live but fairly quiet and has a low ceiling the SM81 will probably do better. But if the subjects are seated or the ceiling isn't a problem and if you can use some moving blankets or gobos to control reverb or the room is relatively dead then the shot would be better and a bit harder to operate. (The angle of acceptance is much narrower.) You are better off controlling room sound and noise up front.

plug-in power?
Published (2009-12-08 15:26:00)
I've spent my life ignoring plug-in power microphones. But there's now more and more devices, including VDSLR cameras and handheld audio recorders, that power the attached microphones this way. So as not to need an outboard box just for phantom or relying on microphones with their own batteries, are there decent plug-in power microphones?

Jerry makes several very valid points here that could be subjects for separate threads. For that reason I have started the following new threads to address these issues. The audio is on the tape but not getting into Vegas. It might be a bad cable or connection. (OOPs if its 1394 the audio is carried with the video so forget the previous remark.) Try a short test recording. But likely you have something set wrong in Vegas. Check the set up it is possible to only capture audio or only video and if only video is set then you will not get audio. I haven't used Vegas sense 6 so I am kind of out of it. You...

"He has a list of 10 videos to shoot on this warm June morning, for which he’ll earn just $200." I think he was making 10 separate videos from this one location and instructor. For that and the editing he is making $200. Not great, but not slave wages. The article read like he drove to 10 different locations. So my initial anger was misplaced.

IMHO Room Tone is but some folks in design (acoustic modeling of architectural spaces) use that for the characteristics of how the room affects audio. Ambiance doesn't need a room. For instance crickets or freeway is ambiance and usually to be picky it is Room Tone plus extraneous noise. But they get used pretty sloppily.

How's focus? Easy to manual focus with hi-res LCD/EVF? Do you feel the difference compared to the HV30? As to flip-out LCD, seems that the XH-A1/G1 design is better.

"Less easy to solve is the skew endemic to all CMOS cameras as well as the potential for a "jello-vision" effect. These effects have been demonstrated but the simple reality here is that a professional isn't going to shoot bouncing a camera up and down or making a habit of whip-pans." -- Nor is he going to shoot from a helicopter or a car. Hi, Without looking at the specs on those monitors I assume that the Acer is a computer monitor and the Samsung:? is that a PC or TV monitor? even if a PC mon has HDMI don't confuse that with a TV mon. The problem is that you can't really separate the mic from the device (so to speak) because the audio is no better than the weakest link. Having said that there are some that are better than others that I have heard. How do they compare to pro mics or even the better USB mics? I don't know of any way to compare them as the device that they feed does not take a pro mic input and I don't know of...

Z5 and other 3rd gen cams can be made switchable. HMC151 is 50/60Hz out of the box. HMC150/152/155 cannot be made switchable, at least cannot be made switchable now. Maybe Panasonic will release a firmware update, but I would not bet on it.

Hello Folks, In the past, I've learned here on the forums that a hypercardioid is the way to go for booming dialogue in interiors with lots of bounce. I'll be shooting interviews on Saturday and do not want to use a lav. I have a Shure SM81 available to me and plan on using it on a boom about a foot or two away from the interviewees. Any thoughts? Thanks!!!

The A1 has been replaced by the A1s. It runs about $3400 and is probably the best tape based camera out for anything like the money. It has excellent image quality and controls. The Panasonic HMC150 is an SCHD card camera for about $3500. It has a better CODEC than the A1s and a little better image with better controls. Both cameras use native 16:9 chips. Some folks gripe about the 150's ...

Constant problem when doing theatre shows. The dresses in this picture are actually burgundy not purple. (except the center gray one). All other colors seem to show up correctly. Whenever they are on stage, their dresses are the "wrong" color. The red seems to be missing in the blue mix. I'm trying to use the R-B matrix settings in the camera but open to other ideas. I may have raised this question a few years ago, but has anyone run across software that generates a video from audio waveforms and sonograms? I've found one program, Acousmographe, that can generate a SWF file but SWF is a bear to convert. It also seems not to have batch capabilities and I have hundreds of files to convert to video. I'm also aware of Camtasia and other screen capture utilities ...

I'm in the process of converting my laptop to a video editor and I want to combine the most efficient use of SSD (for the OS), and traditional HDD for the storage. However, I read in the requirement for CS4 that it's not compatible with SSD. How could this be since many computer are now configured that way from the manufacturer? Damn it!!! I wish I would of known about this sooner, I would of been up there. The JVC HM100 or the Panasonic equivalent would probably be the best choices, offering the better balance of performance and size, however I wouldn't hesitate to use my DVX100A, it uprez's very nicely using the H.264 codec.

Frankly I don't get what they want! The manual white balance is for setting the camera for odd ball lighting or if you want to really do it right. Changing the color temperature in the camera doesn't affect the lighting only the way that the camera sees the lighting. Some cameras like the HPX3700 and Sony F900/23/35 have custom gamma that can effectively change that though but not the 170! ...

First I prefer a separate phantom supply to an in lav battery because they are usually heartier and more flexible. If you have a dedicated battery for a mic then if the camera phantom dies all your other mics are dead; if you have separate phantom its just a matter of re cabling. There are several out there ranging from very good to so so. Not all put out 48v some put out considerably less, ...
