Jazz drummers - having to lose...

Here's something from Bruford's book. Regarding jazz history and growth. Latter day high priests such as Wynton Marsalis have changed it further and brought it to the walls of the fortress, where it can be protected, conserved and taught to the young under strict control, but also wrapped in cotton wool and prevented from further change, or what he would presumably call tampering or dumbing down. Getting back to the OP though, I do...

I couldn't be more relaxed, and who is the WE that you refer to. Are you now speaking for the forum? I am no more the forum police than you are the forum spokesman. I will continue to put in my 2 cents and you can follow your own advice and not read or respond as you see fit. Now do you get it???

This may or may not be known, but it's new to me. Talking tom toms here... I've been playing 10 mil single ply heads now for about the last 2 or 3 years, and I wanted to try some 2 ply heads out, in an effort to get more sustain (more mass = longer sustain). I'm real big on the attack of a tom, which means clear heads. I tried clear Pinstripes, Clear Emporers, and I lost the attack, that slap sound I like. Then I put on clear...

The Moeller book you would probably have to order. it is a good book as a beginning snare drum book; but it doesn't go into any of Moeller's ideas, some of which are illustrated through these really bad film clips. And they are very small.
As far as Stone goes, Stock Control is a standard text that most every drummer has. There are many ways to go through that book as well. But like the ...

Correct your technique, and if you don't know how, get a good teacher who knows how. The pain will most propably continue emerging even if you rest for a while unless you correct something. I have been there too, free stroke fixed it for me, power ball helped with the pain.

Some folks will tell you one is better than the other but it's really about preference; personal choice. Me, I'm an Evans guy but I'm not going to advise you against Remo. That's just my preference. They both make a good drum head. Try both heads for yourself and see which is better for you.

Careful using them four-letter words, Abe. DogBreath will be pressing the Delet button :)
Good question, though.
I wonder if, in part, it's because jazz is such a minority interest? The stakes are high for those playing it seriously; the future is uncertain, and anything said about it that appears to be undermining the music is a worry.
On the other hand, metal is huge and ...

I'm getting 9/8 which is a derivative of 27/8.
The 9/8 rhythm is Armenian\Turkish and called karsilama and usually counted as 2+2+2+3. Hopefully someone can help you better then my best guess.

I am jealous! That final kit looks for all the world like a classic luddie. But it's stealthily hiding fiberglass Blaemire shells that will confound listeners. "Why is that kit so loud??" And it looks great in white!
Very cool! I wish I had beat you to it.

Sounds like a great way to break your cymbals to me. The idea of whacking the stick straight on the flat cymbal somehow "improving the response" is just pretty silly. Yes, it's a lot easier to hit like that but you'll actually find the cymbals open up better when you hit it on an angle with a nice sweeping motion.

Very valid points but a couple of points I add for bringing this up
I was doing a depping gig recently. I never over play... I always play for the music. The music I was playing for was for a name band where the fills were necessary and musical fills. ( the fans were probably expecting them) ???
But anyway my whole point for this post is that I've done two gigs with them recently in...

I started out on a Remo tunable pad in high-school, I like the fact that you could change the tension with a screwdriver to change the feel of the head.
I've used a real feel 12" for the past decade and have liked it.
Last month I picked up a new six inch pad by Vater, it's red-colored and has a good feel and it's pretty quiet. Best of all it fits nicely in my luggage.

Don't, how much time and money have you invested into drumming, wouldn't be a waste if you decided to stop now? I'm constantly having the same issue, I can't do this fill, I trip over myself, it's frustrating. Every single drummer out there has problems, every single person out there has issues like that. You just need to take the day off or week off chill out and then come back to it. Persevere ...

i don't know about the early times because i don't exactly remember, but in the modern era the one thing i've learned that's helped more than anything is learning to relax. so many things have come together for me because of that. my drum teacher has been instrumental with helping me.
a couple years ago i gripped the sticks fairly tightly between my forefinger and thumb and i generally ...
