Spark Plug And Gap
Published (2009-11-25 11:03:00)
The earlier 1ZZ-FE (non-VVTi) used a dual electrode copper plug from the manufacturer, some dealerships went ahead and replaced them with single platinum or even iridium plugs - all in the name of longer service life (and using a more expensive plug as well). Swapping the OEM dual ground plugs with an iridium or E3 plug should be fine.

you will need a 3/8" drive 5/8" spark plug socket, an 8" extension, and a 3/8" socket wrench (ratchet). if you have a '99, all you need to do is pull the spark plug wire boots (4 rubber things on top of the engine with 4 corresponding wires, one for each rubber thing) all loose (but don't pull them all the way out), then once they've all been loosened, pull the whole bunch out leaving the...

If it gelled up, is that a serious problem? Also, when I checked the fliud again yesterday, when I pulled the dipstick out, it had steam coming off it (or smoke). Is it supposed to get that hot?

2005 Engine Vibration
Published (2009-11-20 14:29:00)
>>>Another common problem area is the serpentine belt tensioner<<< I suggested that to them as there was TSB for that(I think)...I just said to remove the belt and run the motor and see. His reply was they did feel there was a vibration from that but at 1600rpm...not 2800rpm. He never told me how they came to that conclusion. I am willing to change those out to be sure but they balked at that idea...

If the ticking gets faster as you accelerate, I would look for a nail or big stone in the tread of your tire. Also, check your engine oil level to make sure the noise isn't the sound of your engine wishing it had more.

My Michelins were installed at 7K miles to replace the horrible Integrity OEM tires. Much better handling and comfort. Didn't note a decrease in mileage of any extent. Junk those tires ASAP in my opinion. This post has been edited by BobLevine : Yesterday, 01:46 PM

A good copper plug is all you really need. Gap would be 0.032". Some plugs recommend a 0.028" gap - but many have run a 0.032" and got good lifespan and performance (power and fuel economy).
You could run a platinum or iridium plug for longer lifespan, if you prefer not to change them every 15K-30K miles. Platinum plugs typically can last as much as 60K miles, Iridium plugs can last as ...

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Double check the bulbs on the right side - a quicker paced clicking noise is a sign of a dying bulb or bad flasher unit. Since it only does this on the one side and seems intermittent , I'm leaning toward a bulb issue, even if seems to be working, check the socket it is in - could be some surface corrosion in there.
Normal flash rate is between 60-120 ...

Possibly the sensor has gone crazy. The fans are triggered by the ECT sensor switch on the thermostat housing. It switches on/off overa specific temperature range.
One quick way to test it is to disconnect the sensor, then run the car. The fans should run constantly at this point - their "failsafe" mode, so to speak. If the fans respond the same way - then you likely have a fan that is ...

Have gone to the 110 limit several times on a 1.5 mile country road late at night, don't plan on doing it anymore until I start doing performance mods. Felt fairly stable at that speed, I'm still running on stock tires that badly need to be replaced and even then it felt fine.

It looks like the solenoid like device that purges (vents) your Evap canister has failed.
It's a system that makes the environmentalists happy by capturing excess gas vapors from the tank and sends them to the engine to be burned, rather than vented into the air.
If that is what happened they can be pricey.

Plugs been replaced recently? Have you replaced the serpentine belt or looked at the belt tensioner? Sounds like the rattle only occurs under load at high RPMs, which is not a big issue, as long as the noise isn't grossly loud. Some synthetics and blends also tend to run on the thin side, so it is not unusual to hear more "mechanical" noises in the engine. Could be anything from a loose belt...

Welcome to the forum!
You need to describe it in detail. How long she tried what; what kind of noise(s) she observed; did the starter turn; was there any noise, even a click; how cold was it; how long had the car not been started. Then also, what happened when you came etc etc.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma - though piston slap and rod knock are unusual for Corollas, unless you know a specific time when the engine ran out of engine oil or ever overheated. Is this a general mechanic or Toyota shop mechanic?
Is it possible to get a sound clip of the noise? Piston slap and rob knock will have a very audible noise as well as vibration. Since the noise happens at ...
