Mrs FR and I did the Brighton seafront 10k race this morning, (thank you for cheering us on Jo) flat as a pancake but a bit windy. I did 43:02 and Mrs FR did 46:23. Although those times are quite a bit slower than our PB's and a bit slower pace than our HM best times (set 3 years ago) they are the best we have done for 10k since turning 50 (2years ago for me, 1 for carol) so quite happy with that and knowing that things are going in the...

CTC: I managed to get Chris to do a 400m, straight after he did a 50 x 50kg bench press challenge, and he still got 1:05.1.....think he can knock in a 1:04.0 when fresh. I see that Rob Smith is teasing me, 0.2s ahead at the moment....grrrrrr! We've still got more to come on this CTC as a team I reckon once BIRC is over with. I quite disagree that world-class rowers are indifferent to erg scores. IMO they're intensely competitive on the machine, cf. Pinsent and Cracknall at BIRC: Link I defy you to suggest they're not taking it seriously. One reason you don't hear them talking much in public about erg results is that they're often reluctant to reveal their fitness levels to their competition. In private, among teammates and coaches, I think...

If you want to produce significant amounts of heat on a regular daily basis, suggest you have a look at and use the Interactive Weight Loss programmes on this site. Alternatively, just row at high power for long times. Your criteria may differ from mine, but 2W/kg for >40' a day should be enough to start with. At rating 20 it'll also guarantee fitness, strength and technique. You can guesstimate...

2:10 to 2:00 even with a distance reduction of 2K is still quite a jump. That change in pace represents a power (watts) increase of approx. 30%. If 2:10 for 10K is easy try for an average of 2:06 for 8K and see how it goes. Row 2:08 for the first 2K and gradually increase the pace over the remaining distance to pull the average down.

Hi Putney, Welcome. Before jumping in with advice, just a couple of questions about where you are now, what drag are you using (not the same as damper setting), in your 10 min sessions what sort of stroke rate and pace (time/500m) are you managing? Rowing can be tough but shouldn't wipe you out after 10 mins. Cheers.

Basically, zero. Drag factor will actually vary slightly from stroke to stroke, and even within a stroke, even when the damper level doesn't move. This is because of subtle changes in the air flow in the room, along with a bit of 'chatter' in the air flow inside the fan housing itself. The number you see on the monitor is a rounded-off average. I doubt very much that most people could tell ...

Assuming you fashioned this stroke, how exactly did you mis-sequence to produce such a curve? Also I find it interesting that 'you' were able to get such respectable power through a deliberate mis-stroke, as I tend to associate any particularly poorly-sequenced stroke with the sort of 'my great grandmother can row faster than that and she's been dead for half a century' splits of 2:45+ common ...
