There also is no stainless finish. It either is or isn't. Most likely hard chrome/armalloy IMO.

I just talked to my son in Afghanistan. We talk everyday on SKYPE. He showed me a camel bone carving he got me. I asked him if he can get me two slabs to make gun grips. He said they have a bizarre every two weeks on the base and he'll ask the Afghans when he sees them next. I will send him the dimentions. They sell giraffe bone grips, why not camel? We'll see.

To para-phrase Clint Smith, "If John Browning had wanted it in there, he'd have put it in there." I, too, vote for you to go back with the original recoil spring set up, sans buffer.

There's no original box (it's in a later plastic one) but the markings are nice and sharp. I'll see it this weekend. I used to own a Python in Electroless Nickel. It had a different tint to the metal that I think I'll recognize. Thanks, Jim. The OP says hi. Bob

I just picked up a set of polished Buffalo bone 1911 grips, and they damn near look like ivory. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Much cheaper then ivory!!

" When I was a kid... " seems to be common amongst these replies, here. We all know that things never stay the same. We all know that our dad's lives were quite a bit different than our own. I just hope that my boy, when he's sixty, won't be saying, "When I was a kid, my dad and I could drive for, oh, maybe an hour to find a good spot to shoot. Now I need a permit to go on public land, 'cept all...

MkIII 22 Caliber Trigger Pull
Published (2009-11-18 13:58:00)
I had so-so results with installing lighter mainsprings on the Mark III and later Colt guns. It seemed that the most problems came with the .22 Mark III models. I suspected there was a wide range of weights in aftermarket light weight spring kits, and I also suspect the .22 springs were often the same as the .357 springs irregardless of package labels. Kuhnhausen says that a mainspring can lower DA pull by as much as 30% to 35%, with a lighter...

Lose the full length guide rod and go with the original design. Lose the shock buffer as it can interfere with the cycling of the Commander slide.
In other words, put everything back the way it was. I learned this after so much headaches and now I use the 1911 the way it was intended.

I believe that the rule, if one exist follows this thought pattern: If the current condition is so bad, that spending the money to have a reputable firm restore the gun, and in the end the restoration actually adds value, then it may warrant restoration.
Otherwise restoring Custers Battlefield, or Pattons SAA is a bad idea.

Peacemaker, I have several third generation SAA, and I have not experienced any of the problems you have described. My competition SAA's have over 25,000 rounds a piece through them without a hitch in the timing. Could it be that the aforementioned SAA of yours, needs to visit the factory ?

Where I live, I have to drive about 10 minutes to go to the gun club shooting range. It's not bad but its certainly not like where I grew up.In My home town (population 800) I could go "down back" and shoot pretty much anywhere without worrying about hitting somebodys house. I now live in suburbia _people from the city call it rural but its not rural too me.

I think a revolver that had been carried and had probably been fired in anger or defense against the contrabandista would be more interesting to own in a Border Patrol gun. Condition works wonders in terms of collector and resale value though, so it sounds like a great find.

There were two "experimental" Colt New Frontier revolvers in .44 Magnum sold in the second Colt Achive auction (Greg Martin 3/29/09). They were lots 581 and 582 with serial numbers 44MAG17 and 44MAG18. If I remember correctly, they sold in the $4000-$5000 range.
The cylinders in these guns were stated to be "nickel- plated, non-fluted" but no mention was made of an unusual metal alloy.

Believe it or not, these two are chopped. The top one (1957) was 7 1/2", the bottom one (1920) was a 5 1/2". Both rebuilt .45's.

You might try NC Ordnance. They have a plastic polymer? replacement for
the original black rubber grips.
